Hi Guys,

I'm brand new to the world of 911s!! Which means I have decided to buy a second hand one. I'm in between the 996 40th anniversary edition with very low milage, or an early 997.

Any advice? I know it is personal choice but I wanted the thoughts of people.

Thank you.

Hello Theo and welcome

The 997 & 996 are different cars but the best thing is to go and have a look and make your own choice. Most people find the overall look of the 997 better but you should go for quality and that should be your primary focus
Where are you based and what is your budget ?

Regards

Theo

Welcome Theo.

So much depends upon what you want from your 911 experience.

If you intend to drive it regularly and your budget stetches to a 997 then (IMO) that's the way to go.

The 996 anniversary edition is a great example of the 996 but whilst it may cost a lot more than a standard 996 now it will only retain that value and desirability if it is kept at lowish mileage and cleaned more often than it is driven.

Thanks guys!!

Very kind of you to respond. I'm actually in a pickle. The 996 I found has about 9K miles on it so it's pretty new. The brakes however did not work well. The Porsche guy reassured me that it was beause they've just cleaned them. I presume because it's Porsche approved it should be genuine. With my budget I could probably only afford a 2004/05 997 and although I prefer it's looks I was thinking that the anniversary would be more special. Stressful!!

Thank you

It would have to be a 997 for me.

Personally, I don't think the 996 Anniversary is that special, in fact, the only thing that makes it special to me is the X51 kit (even then, my guess is that the wide bodied 996 C4S will be a more desireable buy for the pork enthusiast). Given that, I suspect it will not hold its value as welll as a 996 Turbo and therefore, I would be more inclined to go with the newer and prettier 997 C2 or C2S.

Depending on your budget, I would see if you can get into a 996 Turbo though - an iconic supercar and one that should hold its value better than either of the other two (Anni and 997) whilst not having some of their weaknesses.

Another vote for the 996 C4S as well if it's 996 you're after. Even though the Anniversary model is laden with kit and it's a very attractive mileage on the model you've found, try to find a low mileage C4S to compare. You'll love the Turbo bodywork additions that this 4wd has of which the Anniversary has none except the Turbo front nose cone which, imo, seems at odds with the narrow bodied shell. Looks-wise the C4S wins by a country mile. Against a 997, not so sure because I happen to be biased (!) but I think the C4S wins....just!

Happy hunting.

Thank you to all for your very helpful advice. It is indeed very helpful thank you. I may hold out/save for a 997. It sounds like the anniversary is not that special after all.

Sorry, I'm with everyone else on this one; 40th Anniversay just doesn't do it for me. The C4S front bumper just looks wrong on a narrow-bodied car, and the alloys are a little 'bling' for my taste too.

I would say a C4S or turbo is the best place to put your money, 996-wise, if you can't stretch to GT2 or GT3. A 997 would be better still though, but don't buy a dog of a 997 over a mint 996 just because it's a newer model, buy the best you can for your budget...

Look, you wouldn't buy a Ford Fiesta "Celebration" would you?

Same difference.

It's not a model, it's an option list. Just decide what options (and model characteristics) you want and find a car with them on.

Beautiful car GT4 c. Amazing colour.

I'm very new to this, but I get the distinct idea that people that know of Porsches are slightly against the 996. I personally like the 996 targa as well, but I think I will try and avoid this model (996) all together unless it's the turbo. God, my wife is going to kill me!!!

I have never driven a 997, something to do for the weekend.
I think that the 997 looks very nice.

Thanks.

I love the 996 (and the 997), but I had to have a 996 as that was what I wanted when I was younger (and in some ways the 997 was too clinical and easy to drive).

That and the fact I wanted a low mileage 4WD and the 997 C4/C4S was launched about eleven months into the 997 line (and another £4k over the C2/C2S) meant it was a lot more expensive used.

Well I lost the anniversary, hunting continuing. Thanks to everyone I'm after a 4S, or a 996 turbo or a 997.
Is it safe to buy from non Porsche traders?

If you buy from reputable traders you should be OK.

Some that pop to mind are:

RSJ
Portiacraft
911 Virgin
Northway
Strasse
Specialist Cars of Malton
Stirlings

Private purchases are also pretty safe if you get the car independently inspected by a Porsche specialist
