Max Tyre Size for 997 C2 (18") ?

I've been search for ages but everything I read seems to point to C2S with 19" rims... hence, I'd like to know what the maximum tyre sizes for the standard Carrera Coupe wheels (8x18 and 10x18). Book (and everywhere else) says 235/40 and 265/40 respectively... Can I go larger? With some previous (other types of) cars, I've been able to increase width slightly while lowering the profile.

Also important, Is it worth going larger (spirited street, maybe one track visit a year)? Perhaps of note is that I have the (optional) PASM.

I'm running with my winter setup at the moment and would like to start evaluating what I'll do with the spare wheels (currently bootless) I have sitting there :)

Regards,

Gary.

On the rears you can go upto 285/30. I have exactly the same wheel size as yours on my 996 and this is the what I have fitted to mine on the rear. I think you are at maximum on the fronts.

Thanks for the info Maxie - it's a pity I can't step up at the front as well - I'm just a little worried that I'll be inducing understeer into the car with the wider rear-only set up ... :?:

Regards,

Gary.

PS I typed all of the above yesterday and submitted it (it seemed to update okay) - I checked the thread this morning and for some reason, it didn't get updated with my reply yesterday ... :pc:

Erm - no 911 runs more than 235 on the front out of the factory - even the very latest 997 GT3. A 996 GT3 runs on 235/40R18 front and 295/30R18 rears (for a Mk2 - the Mk1 is IIRC 225 front and 285 rear). 996 Turbos run only 225 fronts with 295 or greater rears.

Most 997s on 19s seem to be on 235 fronts and up to 295 rears for cooking Carreras with chunkier stuff running 305-315. I was actually surprised that anything as narrow as what you have was fitted (997s on 18s seem to be rather rare and I didn't know that they went that narrow from the factory).

If there is any problem with handling then you need to speak to a specialist about a geometry setup.

Disco - are these for 8" & 10" front/rear wheels? I know that on the higher spec models (where 9" & 11" wheels were used) they had 235 and 295 rubber. Or am I mistaken?

IIRC the 19s for 235/295 are 8.5 fronts and 11 rears. On the 18" that I know - the Turbo runs a 8 front and 11 rear, the Mk2 GT3 is 8.5/11 and the mk1 is either a half or full inch narrower at both ends.

Normally 18s tend to wear 225 on an 8 and either 265 or 285 on a 10 though.

No, there's no problem with handling - I'm just looking to buy a set of summer tyres and don't want to find out after I've bought them that I could have done things better.

Just to clarify, the standard sizes on the Carrera 2 (Not S) are 18x8 and 18x10 running 235/40 and 265/40 respectively. 19" rims are optional on the C2 but standard on the C2S. Since the majority of early 997 Carrera's are "S"'s, the question I asked rarely comes up :( In fact, for the 19" rims, there's a plethora of info on tyre sizes that can be searched here!

Thanks,

Gary.
