So the PolarExpress goes in for a regular scheduled service and I also get the news she needs new brakes - front and rear - as they are worn down to their wear indicators/minimum. So it's new brake discs front and rear, and also new RS29s front and rear.
Normally this isn't very newsworthy, but it's unique in that it is the first time I'm changing the discs since I bought the car and had new Alcons put on then - almost 30k miles ago including trackdays from Oulton Park to Hockenheim. Of course, there's also the bonus that replacement Alcon rotors cost less than OEMs!
It's not usual that you get better performance + cheaper replacements + longer life on service items, so in this regard I'm very happy. Anyone thinking of changing their brakes on a GT3 really should consider the Alcons. Great product at a good price. _________________ 996 Manthey GT3 For sale at £55k, them £50k then £45k, but finally sold in 2009 for sub £40k after donut buyer found about multiple crash history through the PPI that was hidden under the wrap!

Always newsworthy when the PE gets something new!
Funny I was just reflecting on wear of my very standard brakes yesterday, also over 30k, but with all those trackdays your wear seems amazing. _________________ The Unique Wheel Refurb Service with Loan Wheels & Tyres including part exchange

Ade, are these Alcons good for the turbo also ?
My car has new discs/pads 4000miles ago but once I've cooked the fronts i'll look at the Alcons if they work as well as on the GT3 _________________ Basalt, 996tt x50

Interesting. I purchased my car a year and 2 months ago - and it had had the discs replaced aorund 12-14K miles before that. I will probably go this route when they need replacing. JZM did not even mention pads this year (which were changed at the same time) so it may be a while.....(famous last words)....
Thanks for the practical update! _________________ 2005 BMW 550 M Sport

Adrian, are you going with Alcon again, or Performance Friction?

The Alcons are larger (362mm vs 330mm) and need the the 6pot calipers for correct caliper placement on the larger disc, so you'll need to upgrade the calipers and hats to take the Alcon rotors (not so cheap). But for your usage, the 4pots are more than sufficient. If you need more braking, switching to Pagid Blues or Oranges would offer a noticeable uplift in braking at the expense of durability of the OEM discs (from short life to shorter life). Stick with SRF on the TT. The Turbo 4pot brakes are the same brakes as was originally supplied on the Mk1 GT3.

Alcons 100%.
Performance Friction are a decent budget option, but they don't accept Pagid pads without modification because of their spacing/shape of the hat. The worst part is that Performance Friction pads (PF01s etc) are exceptionally dusty and can cause damage to wheels and/or surrounding paintwork if not religiously cleaned/clayed after every use. _________________ 996 Manthey GT3 For sale at £55k, them £50k then £45k, but finally sold in 2009 for sub £40k after donut buyer found about multiple crash history through the PPI that was hidden under the wrap!
