997 C2 versus C2S

Hi,

Apart from the S being wider, are there any other differences between the cars?

For eg, is it lowered as well?

Are the early 997s generally ok, or are there any issues I should be aware of?

Finally, what would be considered the must have options (I've assumed PSM and PCM are 2).

I'm probably going to get a tip version.

Does £45k from an indy sound reasonable, or too much/too little?

This looks very interesting:

Thanks.

In 997 nomenclature, a C2S is not wider than a C2; they use exactly same body shell. The C4 and C4S are wider than the 2 wheel drive cars. The S models have 19" wheels as standard equipment over the non-S which have 18". £45k from an indy seems bang on the money, a must have is the sat-nav.

Maxie,

That's £20K more!

I have a 997 C2S - see details by clicking on my garage entry under my avatar.

The C2S is a narrow body, the C4S is 44mm wider accross the back but as is 4wd, has less boot space and not as convenient if you have a family.

A client of mine just purchased an early 997 C2S, 25k miles. Sat Nav etc. Good colour combo for £50K from a non-Porsche specialist. I inspected the car and it was in very good condition.

You do get a lot more on the S for your money. PASM. Bi-Xenon's. Better Brakes with the gorgeous Red Callipers. White instrument dials. Stainless steel 's' door plates. Bigger engine etc.

And... when it comes to re-sale - the 's' will be much more desireable for a buyer. As Richard Hammond said - the C2S is the best 911.

I would go for a C2S early £50K's and if you have a monthly finance budget leverage the better residual with a balloon to keep payments down.

Hope this helps.....

Thanks Jamie. However, 50k is stretching my budget too far.

Looking around, there appears to be a £5k difference between the C2 and C2S and personally, I can only see this getting smaller, not bigger.

I think the PASM sits the car 10mm lower, but is this adjustable? If it isn't, then the C2S is out, because it won't get into my garage (which is on a slope...hence the ground clearance question previously).

For £45k you will easily get a C2S. It is a buyers market at the moment.

I see Jamie was the only one to mention the larger engine, the S models have the 3.8l 355hp engines whilst the non-S have the 3.6l 325hp.

Disagree and agree :D

It is a buyers market now, but you will only get a rattly/mega mile/bad spec/colour C2S for £45k.

One of the old Total 911 journos reckoned the C2 was more straightforward than the S, and a better more honest car for it.

Personally though, I'd be inclined to wait for the S cars to come down a bit more and/or stretch the budget as what you gain on a lower entry cost, you may lose through more depreciation.

There is a load more spec on an S.

I just had a c as a loaner and though it seemed strange it felt more chuckable and a little more compliant. I clocked my daily trip to be 30 (4% difference) secs quicker because I think I pushed it a bit harder as I must sub-conciously treat mine with more care as it can bite if mis-treated.

Was chatting with a guy last week who is a new Porsche salesperson at an OPC and he reckons the 997 C2 is pick of the bunch... Lighter than the the C2S (partly due to lower spec, but mostly engine and PASM related), handles better, and with only 30 bhp power difference to the S not noticeably slower (especially on a twisty road). He also thinks the engine is less 'peaky' than the S.

Certainly as a new car it's much better value (and still more power than an early 996, and the same as a later one).

He also says they are much better built than the 996.

My wife's first comment when she drove the loaner was it was easier to drive and she thought she had gone quicker..... there's no car faster than a hire car

The C2S really is a far better car than the C2, so cant understand why he thinks that, those 30BHP make a massive difference. The power is more instant and lasts longer. I must have test driven 50 people back to back, all liked the C2, but after getting in the C2S, every single one preferred it. Its not something Io can describe in words, the car just has a much better all round feeling to it.

In years to come when the prices level out a bit, the C2 will be much harder to shift than the C2S.

£45K is in my opinion too cheap for a C2S, £50K is really the bottom end for a decent car at the moment.

997 C2 vs C2S

I think this comes down to a matter of personal preference. I recently bought a 997, and test drove several C2 and C2S models. Both are fabulous, but for me the C2S has more poise, more grip and more pick-up in the mid-range. There was a C2 with xenons sat-nav etc that was the same price as a C2S and tested it back to back with the C2S and it was damn-near perfect. After all of that, I test drove a C4S and bought that instead.

A good spec low mileage i.e sub 10,000 mile car is worth £50K in the trade even in todays depressed market

The C2S is the model that people want, the c2 doesnt appear to sell even when cheap,

the 45K cars out there are all well over 20,000 miles,

With jamies cracking finance deals, if 45k is your budget your probably better off getting a 996 C4S,

with a balloon the difference beteween a 45 & 55K car is only about £80 a month

if you cant afford an extra £80 a month can you really afford such a car in the first place
