Hi guys,

Was there any difference in spec between a 92H/J C2 and a 93K C2?
Drivers airbags maybe...anything else?

Thanks!

Taz :!:

Ok. thanks Boxsey. Any other differences? I see that they have different steering wheels..the 93K has one like the Celebration model...was this to fit an airbag?

Steering wheels can be deceiving because many owners will have changed them. However in answer to your question all RHD 93 model years had an airbag wheel fitted (Nb. this could also apply to a late 92J which could be a 93 model year if it was built after September 92).

Here are a few snippets about changes from my 964 buyers guide:

93 model years had:

air bag steering wheel
VIN placed on the left windscreen A pillar
Seat back got electrical adjustment rather than spring lever
Also had the revised Luk DMF that was introduced in 1992
Cup wheels (from 1992) with 17 inch as an option
4 pot rear calipers added
Breather pipe on distributor (from 1992)

Brilliant, thanks lads.

Boxsey, do you mind me asking which buying guide you have?

Taz :)

IINM, I think the later 964 cars also got the head gasket put in... the early cars were prone to oil leaks because there was no gasket between the head and block. I'm not sure in which year the gasket was put in though... A lot of 964s which have a top end rebuild have the gasket put in.

Thanks Polar Express. I remember reading that now, just had a look on porsche964.co.uk and it says on that the gasket was put in after 1991 model year. So does this mean there is no need for the top-end rebuild? Or does it still have to be done..but obviously just not modified?

I've seen two C2's up for sale both with around 90K to 100K on the clock. One is a 92 J and the other is a 93K. The 92J is up for £14K and is black with black leather, standard seats. The 93K is up for £16K and is midnight Blue with cream leather Sports seats. I'm tyring to find out the history on both, but both say that they have a full SH.

£15K is really my limit and I still have to budget for Insurance yet! I was just trying to see if it was worth me diggin around the sofa to find the extra for the 93K!

Cheers

Taz :)

It's the Porsche Carrera, Turbo & RS (964): Ultimate Buyers' Guide by Peter Morgan. £9.95 from Amazon.

FWIW the 92J sounds the nicer combo and better value to me. But of course it ALL depends on condition.

Topman Boxsey, i've just ordered it now.

Yeh, I'm leaning towards the 92J as well, especially as I was after a black one too. I've emailed both for more details and pics before going to see them, as they are both in tim-buk-too in relation to London!

The 92J is in Gloucestershire...i.e where all the water is at the moment..yikes!

The 93K is in County Durham.....absolutely mileeeeeessss away!

With regards to a PPI...do they charge more the further they have to go? Or should I just get one that is more local to the location of the car? I'd go and see the car first, and then obviosuly get the PPI done before commiting to buy.

Taz :?:

If you want a PPI done on the Glos one, contact Brian at Woodward Motors on 01454 261067.

He's a Porsche specialist and looked after my car for a PO for quite a few years, including doing a minor top-end rebuild on it. I've no association with him but the pile of receipts I've got from them gives me a good feeling that he really knows how to look after 964s.

Oh something else to remember. Any car registered after August 1992 can not legally have it's CAT removed.

Ian.

Probably the best bet will be after seeing something you like (and having checked all the documentation etc) is to seek recommondatinns for, or find a local specialist to carry out the PPI. It's best carried out at a garage. Don't forget the leakdown test.

The addition of the gasket was the only reasonable solution to the imperfect seal created between the metal-to-metal join between the block and the head. The gasket does not create a perfect seal, but it is significantly better than no gasket at all on the regular non-blueprinted 964 engine (nb, the 964RS had a blueprinted engine - ie, matched head and block).

A top end rebuild will refresh many other parts and focuses on things like valve clearances, piston seals, compression, etc. The value of a top end rebuild is far greater than just a gasket installation. Not all 964s require top end rebuilds as it depends on previous engine history, usage, maintenance, luck, etc as there have been 964s that go on for well over 100k miles never needing one. But you do hear of many losing compression, become tired, or just rattly by around the 100k mile mark, and that a top end rebuild adds another 100k miles to the life of an engine.

YMMV!

Boxsey, thanks for the tip, I'll give the guy a call if I end up going to see it. I'm still waiting for the seller to get back to me..grrrr.

Polarexpress, thanks for that. I was just wondering whether if the difference between the later and earlier models was just literally a gasket inbetween the head and block...like a sandwich, or if the work was more involved i.e that a grooved channel has to be machined in the block for the gasket to sit in etc.

But, i suppose the specialist will be able to tell me when/if a re-build needs to be done. I'm guessing from the price on this one, that it hasn't been done....

...but fingers crossed!

Taz :D
