Hello fellas

Just left a deposit on a 996, 1998 model on 72k with full Porsche History.

I know these cars are 'supposed' to have a bit of sludge on the oil filler. This one has quite a bit frankly. Seems to run fine, and the water tank didnt have any evidence of oil mixture. Picture is attached. Can anyone advise?

Thanks

Zain.

Could be head gasket ?? But you say there is no water/oil mix in the water tank !! If a car is not used for a while the 'sludge' can build up.. it maybe worth taking the car on a long (ish) run and have a look then ! But a PPI (which I hope your going to get done?) will confirm any problems !!

Welcome to the fourm by the way.. Whats the full spec of the 911 you've bought ?

Thanks fellas. Just switched over from the world of E30 M3 (mines the white one on ebay if interested)

Its a 1998 C2 Tiptronic, black, full aero kit, 72k with full Porsche history, fully specced with sat nav, comms pack, savannah leather etc. Very nice, what would you say, valuation wise?

He hadnt used it in a couple of weeks, and it just had a major service in March, and nothing is noted on that invoice (which is the only specialist and not main dealer visit). Guy is minted so money wasnt an issue in his 6 years of ownership (he bought it for 55k from main dealer, Ive seen the receipt), as brand new discs, pads and Pirelli PZero's suggest. Ive left a deposit, but in the agreement that Porsche compression test it next week. Is that sludge excessive? These 996's have head issues dont they?

That's quite normal for a low use car, no oil top up, short journeys and you'll get the mayonnaise build up you see here.

Check for oil in 'blobs' water that's generally a more reliable indicator of head gasket problem. sometime you can see bubbles in water when engine is running..

I think there is something you can buy to check if there is oil in the water, its like a paper PH strip.. I can't remember where you get them from (maybe Halfords may do them??).

You dip the card in the water, and the paper goes differnt colours if there are traces of oil in it..

OK, thanks all. Im just about to book an inspection from a guy called Mark Wibberly, from sportscarguides.com, who say they are the largest independant Porsche inspectors. Anyone here know them? He seems a nice chap

Including his travel, vat, 8 page report etc £275, which seems ok when youre about to spend circa 20k. He seems to know his stuff too

They did the inspection on my tt

I was pretty impressed, got PPI by e mail the day I booked it, a telephone report telling me there were no major issues followed by a written report and a CD of some 70 photos showing all paperwork and differing points on the car.

Used them Because Peter Morgan wouldnt travel to where my car was (Wisbech)
