Did my 1st track day on Friday - new Bedford GT circuit with LotusOnTrack. I now know why I bought my car - loved every minute of it even though I got rinsed by the Lotus' and even a race spec Peugeot 205 that gave everyone a good hiding. Were some Cayman S's there that were seriously quick, and a GT3RS on slicks that was being driven very slowly. Awesome day, am booking my next trackday today!

During one of my many spins, the brake pads light came on. It went off by the end of the day and didnt come on for the rest of the weekend (300miles more motorway driving). I was wondering if this is a gentle prod to getting new pads, or if I need to get them done asap? My service is in August and between now and then I will cover 3k miles, including a 1250 mile trip to Biarritz.

At the service I also need new discs, as Sid @ Hatfield says they are too rusty to pass the Mot.

Any advice on how soon I need to get new pads done? I really would love to wait until service, as its a major pain to get my car to a dealer. Thks for any advice.

O/T porsche discs are awful for rusting - make sure you dry them out well after washing the car by going for a quick spin or blowing them dry with air.

With regards to the lid you'd enquired about - it was great when i used it on a recent trackday with good visibilty and ventilation and not too heavy.

As for the pads - go on thickness. Think OPC will reccomend replacement before it's really due but you shold prob change once down to about 3/4mm of pad left (guesstimate). Trackdays obviously accelerate wear so if you had 4/5mm left and were planning a long road trip you should be ok to replace them after.

Disclaimer - i ain't no expert

you need to have a look to see how much is left and work out which pad caused the warning light to come on . . . .
rusting discs are a problem on 911's and expensive (!)

How can I measure the thickness left? I presumed it would require taking bits apart and looking - can I do it visually?

pretty sure its the back left, given the wear on the disc compared to the other 3.

and dare i ask - anyone know how much new pads and new discs cost, excl labour?

eurocarparts should list them (with the caveat that some one said the non porsch disc's rust on the hubs?)

Also if you a PCGB member and want to get them from the OPC you'll get a 10% discount. (If you're not, I am so can come along with you and help out)

Wagon I see your in SW11 there’s a PCGB meet in Richmond this Wednesday at the Drysat I should be there as well should Oceancarera and possibly Sundeep. It’s right next to petersham village pedestrian gate to Richmond park

Depends on your alloys' open-ness really but you should be able to make a decent judgement by looking at them. Failing that it's a wheel off inspection.

Hint - the pictures Sundeep has posted of his old pads were a tad beyond the point at which they should've been replaced!!

Nice - just checked JZM and new pads & discs all round is about £900 in parts. Will go nicely with the new RMS (warranty), clutch and 4 tyres I just got!

Just so I am clear about the discs: they rust cos they are not stainless (I am an ex-materials engineer so you would hope I understand that bit...), but that is fine up to a point, after which they have rusted too much and must be replaced? I just want to know how that point is judged, so OPC dont make me get new discs uneccessarily, when all they need is a hard session to clear off some of the rust.

smtk - am busy this Wed, but am thinking of joining PCGB soon. Thks for letting me know.

Also try Design 911.. I bought all Porsche parts for £700 and had my local Brembo specialist put them on for £120.. I understand there are many after market parts that you might want to look at.. ?
You could also call Zentrum Nottingham for their prices as all round inc' fitting is about £650.. (Zentrum 01159 613 911 - Martin)

Thanks guys. Need to buy Porsche parts cos of warranty. Will get them privately fitted. Will also make sure in the future I always do some good hard braking before parking if wet.

I'm still struggling to understand at what point the level of rust on the discs is an MOT fail? Anyone know the ins and outs of that?
