Looking for good 993 C2S....

Willing to pay good money for the right car. I.e. Evidence of some money being spent on it preferably at a Independent Specialist not just OPC, mileage not a problem if all the right things have been done, not looking for a car to spend £4-5k putting right in the first few months.

Keen on dark blue/black, not keen on full metropole blue interior. Original unmodifed spec preferred.

Any honest buyer/owner tips/experience welcome by PM - have read most of the posts but interested to hear your stories/recommendations.

Thanks

Difficult car to find

only 275 cars imported,

last 1 sold from my website in 18 hours!!!

I've never spent less than £3000 servicing a 993,

1 get it inspected

2 the weak points in my experience are

Front wishbone bushes, its cheaper to change the wishbones than the bushes, then you need a 4 wheel alignment check total cost circs £700

Brakes, the perennial problem of corrosion on the inner faces

caliper spring plates, had quite a few cars with new brakes but they didnt do the lifting / spring plates

rear pu ( bumper) support brckets, exhaust and catalyst heat shields, circa £300/£400

oil leaks from cam covers, not dear, timing chain covers and rear main oil seals, means engine out and 9 hours labour just to take the engine out

A lot of cars are long over due the big 4 year / 48,000 mile service circa 8 hour job,

One of the problems being a lot of low mileage cars dont get the proper servicing done as the dealers know the customer is only going to do a couple of thousand mies a year, so the do intermediate servicng to keep cost down, then you buy the car get it brought right up to A1 Condition and you get a £4000,

then you get the stone chips done, refurb the wheels, and then a loving coat of Zymol

HENCE BEST ADVICE NEVER BUY WITHOUT A PPI

There is at least one dealer who does all this to all his cars

( sorry for the blatant advert)

Mark - thanks - have read your comments on your website and watched your stock for a couple of months....

My dilemma I s'pose is do I buy a car knowing it needs money spent or look at the circa £35k cars from dealers and not really know if it's kosher? Then I know it's been put right. Views seem to suggest these are solid cars and quite bullet proof with reguklar maintenance but also need driving and driving quite hard as they designed to be.

This is not going to be my everyday car. Am also a bit of a perfectionist and can be very picky where most may not be. Am I asking too much??

Have looked at one for £29k and theres at least £2k I know it needs spending on it and thats without considering the motor. Approaching the 10 yr mark theres going to be loads of seals I know are going to need replacement.

Trying hard not to buy on emotion!!! But this is the best looking Porsche IMHO ever produced. BTW didnt realise as few as 275 came over.

I hate this time of year, I am looking to put her away for the winter in about 6 weeks time.. :(

I don't do many miles in mine, as I only use her as weekend drive.. and don't drive her that hard (did do down to the ring few weeks ago and will do next week driving back there) I have not heard this before - "but also need driving and driving quite hard as they designed to be."

But good luck in your search, and welcome BTW.

Daniel - thanks for welcome...looking fwd to being an owner....

Ref comments on driving...low mileage cars idling around, and slow driving on UK roads not the same as Autobahn/German roads they were developed for. Brakes need to be used to keep fresh, engine designed for fast driving. IMO a lot to be said for blowing cobwebs out. Of course I'm not talking abuse. Advice comes from a reputable independent expert highly commended for his companies' servicing of 911's. They will be doing a PPI as and when.

I welcome contrary opinion tho'...I'm still learning!

The correct figure I believe is 344 (251 manual, 93 tipronic).

Each of the varioram models was not supplied in great numbers which is why trying to find one is harder. Here are the numbers I have for the different varioram models (UK RHD)

Targa 532 (333 manual, 199 tiptronic)
Carrera 354 (279 manual, 75 tiptronic)
Carrera 2S 344 (251 manual, 93 tiptronic)
Carrera 4 274 (274 manual only)
Carrera Cab 197 (129 manual, 68 tiptronic)
Carrera 4S 181 (181 manual only)
Carrera 4 Cab 75 (75 manual only)

Ian.

Mark.

These figures are only Varioram figures so 1996 onwards.

Before 1996 it was all C2 and C4 so in total yes more C4 coupes. I don't have the figures for non-varioram cars to hand.

If yon want pre-variorams there are lot's of C2 and C4 cars available but if you want varioram then because they increased the model range significantly they didn't make that many of each, even the coupes.

Will

The figures came from Porsche GB I believe and were given to PCGB.

Hi Chris

Not too keen on silver then
. Nor me with Arena red, was in v good condition too, and amazing low price, but the emotion wasn't there when I looked at her, not like the blue. They are nice colours, but not my personal fav. It's a personal thing, some prefer silver or arena red.

Did we both drive to Cheshire on saturday to see different cars?

I put a deposit on an Ocean blue one on sunday
. Hope to collect next week.

Good luck with your search mate.

Sorrry, missed your post...

So you bought Paul's! We both went to Cheshire to see different cars and I was booked in on the Sunday to see yours but the seller let me know he'd sold to avoid wasted journey. The car you now own is the perfect spec for me..not easy to find hey? Fancy selling it on? ;)

I bet we've been followig each other everywhere... a couple of cars I rejected below £30k have now found their way into the trade on the same forecourt in NLondon. Now I know what to avoid!!

Let me know if you hear of a similar car. Another trip to Cheshire tomorrow, identical to yours but it has 17" wheels and a tad less miles. What do we think pricewise?

Cheers

You're so right Chris.

Ocean Blue with marble grey interior was the combination I wanted, and with the wide bodied C2S in such high demand I did'nt think it would be easy. and presumed I would probably wait about 6 months.

The miles on this one is slightly higher than I wanted at 60k, but the condition was excellent. Apparently, the really low mileage garage queens have more problems than those that are regularly exercised, so be aware.

I reckon currently pricewise low 30-40k miles fetches £34-36k private sale/£36-38k dealer. 50-60k miles would be £30-33k private/£32-35k dealer. Easy calculation for the middle miles. Obviously allow fluctuation for condition, but generally, do you agree? Usually, winter season sees a slight slump, but not sure with this model now.

If you are ever Cambridge area, come and see and compare notes. I had it detailed recently by Nathan at Autogleam, great job. See the spit and polish section for photos.

There will be one I know of for sale after 15th of november, ocean blue, under 40k miles, and £34.5k pricetag. Might look myself first!

Sounds about right for Arena Red... hopefully not with the tan interior... after mechanical condition and mileage, colour is everything imho.
