Interested in your opinions re long term value of the GT3 Mk1 against the Mk2

I know all the techno diffrences, however how will the fact that the Mk1 was made in far fewer numbers effect the residuals,

Is the Mk1 possibly going to be a classic along the lines of a 964/993 RS?

Yes. The Mk1 was a true limited edition built to homologate unlike the Mk2 which they built as many as there were buyers. The Mk1 was also hand built in Weissach unlike the Mk2 which rolled off the regular production line (which is also why Mk1s tend to squeak more than the Mk2). Some argue that the Mk1 had a more organic/cohesive design which is more distinctive than the Mk2. I guess in 10-20 years time, people may consider the Mk1 as the original GT3... a bit like the original [73] RS... of course, this is all speculation, and my opinion is hardly biased!

A not-so-long-ago thread on PH asked which would be the "next classic", and there was reasonable consensus that the Mk1 would be next...

PH - the next classic?

How many Mk 1 did they build? (and how many Mk 2?)

I dont know if I see the GT3 reaching Iconic status, possibly the Mk1 will be more sought after in time, though that is difficult to call.

One thing for certain Porsche have been forced to make GT3's because otherwise the 911 regardless of model is way behind in the performance stakes against modern cars.

Example

1988 normal 3.2 911 bhp 231

0-60 5.6 top speed approx 164mph

Performance car of the time

Volkswaken Golf GTi 16v bhp 136bhp

0-60 7.6 top speed 134mph

Fast forward 2006

997 C2 320bhp

0-60 5 seconds, top speed 178mph

Performance car

Subaru Imprezza 320bhp

0-60 4.5 seconds, top speed 160 mph.

Porsche are falling behind and without the GT3, they are not on the pace.

To add,

For the money difference that is

Although the Mk 1 will be comparatively more sought after, I too doubt it will reach a classic status like the 2.7RS, and to lesser extend the 964/993 RS are heading, simply because the no. of mk 2 produced, they are just too similar.

Also it is water cooled,

Kiss of death for classic status me thinks

classic.....

Mk1 will become as the 1st water cooled GT3

subsquent versions all improve or claim to but there is only one original and of coure the numbers were limited unlike mk2

I think the 997 GT3 will be the first classic.

And the colours were :

Arctic Silver 34
Black 13
Polar Silver 4
Biarritz White 1
Speed Yellow 18
Guards Red 15
Cobalt Blue 1
Zanzibar Red 9
Iris Blue 6
Ocean Blue 1
Forest Green 1
Renault Blue 1
Rubystone 1
Blue Turquoise 1
Total 106?

Think it was about 250 mk2's.

Not sure if either will ever become a classic, Mk1 stands better chance than Mk2, but neither should depreciate as bad as most other 911's

Not sure that's a valid comparison Daz, but I'd be interested to see how the comparison held up if you substituted the Golf GTi with an Integrale. The Imprezza is surely a valid comparison with an Integrale not a Golf GTi?

Seem to remember the Integrale was sub 6secs to 60. Somewhere I have a Car magazine article listing the 911, Integrale & Elan as the fasted A-B cars available at the time. Would also be interesting to track the relative prices.

Daz,

if you are interested I understand there may be a very nice speed yellow Mk2, coming to market at the end of the month & it has the sweetest sounding exhaust out there plus a few other bits besides.

Always interested in Speed Yellow,

Have now regained my confidence, no more silly talk of money in the bank,

Off to make the next million,

Daz

With high confidence and high millions, how about a 993GT2? bags of thrills and even bigger bags of ooomph! and it certainly won't depreciate!
