Hi guys

I'm totally new to this forum and am looking for buying advice.

I'm looking at moving from my current 2002 Z3 MCoupe to a 911. Probably looking to spend about £45k but don't really know what model to go for, for to avoid, buy from a dealer or not etc. etc.

I know thats all a bit vague but absolutely any advice would be very welcome.

Phil, there are too many choices! You will have to be a bit more specific as to your wants and needs. Will it be a daily driver?

If you're after a more hands on experience you could go 993 TT or RS, but these are probably better for the summer/weekends.

If you need something a bit more civilised, a 996 C4S is a lovely car, and you might be able to sqeeze into an early 996 TT.

There are loads of other choices as well (late coupes, Targa, cabrio) - it really depends on what your priorities are.

Sorry about the vagueness - I'm a total 911 virgin. It'll be a daily driver doing about 300 miles a week, but my wifes got a 330Ci for the practical side of life.

Personally I prefer the looks of the 996 to the 993 so it'll definitely be a 996, but other than that and it being a manual car I have no major preferences on whether its a Coupe, Targa or cabrio.

I'd suggest you go and drive a few 996 variants and take your pick! Best to buy a late car, 2002 onwards as these are facelift models and some of the gremlins had been ironed out with the facelift.

If you're a power junkie the 996 TT will take some beating, but be prepared for relatively high running costs using it daily. Otherwise the rest of the 996 models are probably your best bet, and they're not exactly slow!! The 996 C4S is essentially a Turbo wihout the engine - fantastic car IMO.

Buy the best condition, latest model you can and you'll have a corking good car you'll never get enough of!

Am I better buying from a Porsche dealer or isn't the premium worth it (and are they as unhelpful as I've heard?

To be honest I'm coming from a pretty quick car in the MCoupe but I'm not moving to a 911 for the performance. I've dreamed of owning one from being a kid so its more about the car than it being the quickest thing on the road.

Buying from a dealer will give you piece of mind, and a warranty.

It can cost a fair amount to put a warranty onto a 996 that doesn't currently have one eg. one from a specialist, as the car has to pass a 111 point inspection (the cost of which has recently gone up) - any work that is flagged up needs to be corrected, then a warranty can be taken out - someone else might be able to tell you the exact price of that. So it all depends how much this work comes to, and how much an equivalent car from a OPC will cost.

There are some good cars for sale on this website. Stirlings are very well respected and I think give a warranty with all their cars?

The Porsche warranty costs about GBP 725 and you will almost certainly need to get a RMS fix (GBP 600+) before it passes the 111 test. Not sure how much the test itself costs.

The test is 2 hours labour £235. And you can get lucky on the RMS, mine passed with no major problems.

C4S is a fab car,

Perfomance wise on a par with your M Coupe, however your car will feel faster because of the way the 3.2 engine revs.

IMHO the M Coupe performance bargain of the century, great car, demands respect and rare, cant understand why not more sought after

RMS test/fix??

Warranty sounds a bargain - BMW just put it up to £1025 plus £250 excess for each claim on the MCoupe. Had MC's for the past 5 years now so ready for a change so if anyone fancy's an 02 plate MCoupe give me a shout :wink:

Gonna take a trip down to my local dealer (JCT600 Leeds) tomorrow to have a look round and get a better feel for what I want. Let you know how things go.

A regular 996 will probably feel exceptionally different compared to the grunty (and slightly faster) MCoupe. Be prepared! 300miles a week as a daily driver is nothing... I'd recommend a facelift 996 with warranty if available... but my hunch is that you may soon find yourself wanting something with a bit more power/character... :wink:
