Battery Question

Hi All,

Washed the car this morning and took her for a short spin to dry out the brakes. 2 hours later went to start her up and she wouldn't turn over, battery gauge just above 10V :(

Phoned Porsche Assistance (aka RAC) who turned up in 40mins from me making first call.

Alternator ok, so new battery probably needed. Went for a long blast to try and get some charge in to it, the battery gauge reads around 13.5V, have to see tommorrow if this is held.

Assuming i do need new battery...where should i get one from, I am based in North West London?

The RAC guy said i should get battery from OPC as they are gel filled and only Porsche supply these. Given i also want to preserve my warranty and need Porsche parts to to do this, do people think this is the best (if pricy) option?

as always any thoughts appreciated...chrs!

Do a search on battery! there is so much on here - every 993 drains batteries - get a spare and keep it charged - dont buy a OPC at 120 quid - get a Bosch silver for less than 60 - even get two!

example from one of my previuos posts.../...
"Batteries dont like 993's. There is a current drain which causes them to go flat in a few days. Clock and alarm system are the culprits. Thats probably why Porsche charge 120 quid for a battery - it helps to keep the parts dept profits up.
My car has a battery disconnect switch installed by a previous owner. If you dont use the car every day for a decent drive the battery gradually discharges to the point where it damages the cells. If you have a garage with power you can get a mains fed battery maintainer to keep it in tip top nick.
I would be inclined to run the car for a while and take it to a non porsche specialist auto electrician to test the drain and check the alternator output.

Do a google search for bosche and look at their battery advice as well - low usage and short trips and weekends only and no top up charging and stereo and aircon and lights and god know what else electrical wrecks a battery - and if its 3 years old then its time for a new one!

And a bit of a run round wont fully charge a very flat battery - 18 hours overnight on a trickle charger will - you can get one on this site.

By the way the same applies to 996's as well. And Vectras!

Stevo, thanks for advice, i forgot to say I had already done a search - very useful info...I did notice you popped up on every battery thread with words of wisedom...batteries seem to be a sort of personal crusade!

Would buy a trickle charger but do not have mains supply in my garage... :(

But still wasn't clear for 996s if people just get new batteries from OPCs or is it possible to get porsche 'badged' batteries elsewhere cheaper? I want to make sure I stick with Porsche OEM parts...or am i taking things too far?

Thanks!

I have a New Bosche Silver and a previously bought £120 Porsche badged one from Guidford Porsche - in my opinion there is no material difference where it matters - how long it stays charged. I now keep one on trickle charge with the same make of charger as sold here - then swap them over when one starts to fade.
My car has a battery switch with a removable key under the bonnet and the previous service history shows a battery replacement after 20k miles. I have now done 46k miles.
One problem that made mine worse was the incorrect wiring of the radio when I changed to Alpine - it left the CD stack and main radio permanently on - this was found by Ray Northways (independant) when I had the last service.
In my opinion - get a Bosche. - you'll have the money left to get another on 3 years if you need to!

where's the cheapest place to get a Bosch Silver battery from??

Costco seem to be the cheapest...but you have to be, or know somebody who is a member.

Hmmm...OPC want £143 for a battery, £201 inc fitting and they want to do a drain test bringing total up to £259.

seems a bit steep to replace battery.... :(

Is anybody able to give me size/details of their 80AmpHr 996 battery so i can get quotes elsewhere? OPC wouldn't give me details and mine is currently stuck in car at home with lids locked.

TIA

I just went inyo Halfrauds and got one off the shelf for mine....fits and works a treat, can't remember exactly how much, but a lot less than £143, and the fitting was free.... :)

Remember to have the ignition on when you change it though.... :)

Cheers Steve.

The nice chaps at JAZ in Wembley are going to do me a Bosch for £70...I will still be able to sit down after that...

Thats a horrific price for a battery, whos the parts manager Vincent Price?

Stick with Jaz.

Daz

Get you local friendly sparky to come along and wire up a nice feed to your garage, cost me about £400. Is a little expensive just to run a trickle charger, but I got lighting and some sockets too.

Amazing the wife agreed to it, but is very handy, especially at night and over the winter when the car wasn't used.

Mark.

Mark, you are doing it wrong -

1. Get the wife to push start you a couple of times.

2. Suggest that you need to spend £400 on a power source.

3. She will be happy to sponsor you!!
