Hi,Ive just bought a 996 2002 "02" Turbo Manual, whilst driving home the other day, driving in 6th gear doing around 80mph i decided to plant my foot to the pedal and try and gain some speed, i noticed that the Speedo didn’t move much but my revs increased by 3/4k rpm. It’s an in fluctuating problem which only occurs once or twice every few days, IS THE CLUTCH ON ITS WAY OUT???Porsche cannot find a problem with it, but again this morning at happened again this time i was driving along at 40mph in 4th i decided to put my foot down and no movement took place but the revs jumped by 4/5k rpm.Any suggestions???

sounds like a slipping clutch..............

Thanks,

But how come it only happens now and again, not every time i drive it!!!
Porsche have taken the car out on a Test Drive and they came back simply suggesting that it could have been the 400+ mile journey the vehicle had undertaken when driving back from London.

Sounds like one huge excuse they gave you..

You should be able to drive forever with that car never mind 400 miles!

Slipping clutch I reckon.. and the worst time for it is low speeds in high gears like you have been doing.

i would take it to either another OPC or a decent indi - its obviously not normal.

OK Thanks for all your help,

One more thing, is an extended warrenty any good?

I have just had the inspection done so I can have one on mine. I woul not have bought the car if it wasnt eligible for a warranty. Personally I think it is "must". It means that you can drive it flat out and sleep well at night knowing that if it goes bang then its not a £10,000 hole in your wallet. Plus the recovery and free loan car.

The general concensus seems to be at £725 the extended warranty gives you peace of mind during ownership and helps re-sale. A definite req on a 996 I'd say.

I recently renewed mine.

The only time I have experienced your problem and it wasn't the clutch causing it, is just after having new rear tyres fitted. So much tyre soap was used that I could spin the wheel INSIDE the tyre!

But yours does sound like a clutch problem from what you say.

Take it to another OPC or an independant. I would definitely get second opinon.

It might be the spring/pressure thingy (dunno the technical term!) that holds the clutch together when drive is engaged is not working properly. Might explain the intermittent nature of the prob. Surely a slipping clutch would slip every time significant load was applied in high gear?

Defo take it to a respected specialist for a second opinion. At least take a technician out in the car with you driving so you can replicate the conditions.

maybe it only shows up when the clutch etc is hot ?

I'm not sure all the warrenty policy would cover clutch, as it is a wear and tear item. However, when I bought my C2 a few yrs ago from an indi the clutch started slipping within days of purchase, the dealer chanded the clutch for me without hassle.

I'd put my money on slipping clutch too, putting foot down on high gear is a common test for clutch slipage.

Thanks for the Help, ive booked the car into OPC next week and ill see what happens,

IF it is a Slipping CLutch will the indi have to pay for it?

You'd have to look at the small print carefully, as clutch is a wearable item.
