Haywire Speedo

My 1998 996 Carrera's speedo has gone haywire. It works normally for a couple of miles, then spins round to 175mph and stays there until the car cools down. (Digital speedo still works normally).

I've been told by one garage that it's not the cable and I need to replace the clock unit, £750 + vat plus labour. Now while I can understand a high performance item for the engine being mores expensive than a run of teh mill Punto, I can't see that there is that much differential on a clock!

Anyone else had experience of this problem? 911 Doctor has already given me his view privately, looking to see if anyone has actually had to fork out!

This is my first 911, had it for about 6 months and getting a bit disheartened by small niggly things that are costing a fair bit. Allowed myself £2500 for my first year of running (including 48k service) may well blow that.

Thanks in advance,

Wayne.
