I had a full service carried out last August by the official porsche dealers. Since then I have amassed after continual daily use the total amount of 3,500 miles. I use mobil 1 and am now faced with the following dilemma, Do I change the oil and or filters or keep going for another 12 months? and probably a repetition of the same mileage.

I had a very interesting conversation with a Porsche specialist about using Mobil 1 and similar in older engines i.e 993's as he has had several experiences of cars overeating. He followed this up by contacting an oil specialist who confirmed that this could happen and that Mobil 1 was one of the most successful marketing campaigns he had ever seen that was full of misleading information.

The use of this type of oil can cause the engine to lose power due to heat build up adn therefore if you are going to use your car they way it is meant to be used, get a slightly thicker viscosity or semi-synth oil put in.

Interesting, William. I'm using Mobil 1 for the first time because a) it's fully synthetic and P-recommended, b) it's P-approved and b) it was conveniently available at reasonable cost.

Peter, if you've only done 3500 miles in "continual daily" use that's a load of short journeys that do no car any good, let alone a Porsche...

If you mean August 2004 then change your oil. A year of short journeys will mean the oil will have more moisture & petrol contamination in it than a car that has done more miles.

Regarding oil, the synthetic / non-synthetic and viscosity argument will run and run. I use Motul fully synthetic in my 993 (10w-40 summer and track, 0w-40 or 5w-40 winter) and never have heat problems. I also use fully synthetic (heretic?) Silkolene or Motul 15w-50 in my 73 race car, again with no heat problems.

Ian.

PS Never used Mobil 1 so can't comment on that specific claim. I don't use it because I think Motul is better not because its a synthetic.

if it was me i'd change your oil every 6months minimum.............especially with the stop/start driving its had if you've only put on 3.5k miles in 12 months as a daily driver

Used to use mobil 1 in my car and was going through 1 litre every 1200 - 1500 miles depending on use. After taking to car to Northway for last service on their advice switched to texaco havoline semi now car uses approx. 1/2 litre every 2000 miles!

If the oil's gone black then best to get it all changed. Mobil 1's supposed to be good, you don't want all those contaminates (wearing) in the engine.
Might be worth changing the oil before it gets too dark in future - as well as considering milage & annual servicing factors.

Northway advised me away from Mobil 1 on my 993 they say its too thin for the older engines, recommended Texaco havoline.

Remember when Porsche stuck that 'Porsche reccomends Mobil1' sticker in the 993 engine bay, Mobil 1 was 5W-40, and not 0W as it is now. OPC East London reccomends Esso Ultron Fully synthetic for the 993 which is a 5W-40. Esso Ulton is made my ExxonMobil, which also make Mobil1. I wouldn't be too suprised if the Esso Ultron you can buy now is not too different from Mobile1 of the time.

The car has now done 105,000miles. When I purchased it the owner was doing motorway driving and said it was using 2 litres to the 1000. With my driving it uses nothing. I drive it to work in the morning and back again at night about 6 miles either way, top speed about 70mph. Transport for weekends is in the family car, hence the low mileage. I love driving my car even if its tottering about but do not want to encourage problems. Should I give it a good thrashing once a month. The oil on the dipstick still looks new and I beleive the OPC in Seville used mobil 1 5w-40 due to the higher temperatures in Portugal.

As a matter of course would change the oil, especially as previously mentioned, short journeys are the worst thing for the engine and oil.

Personally would question whether Mobil 1 is the best choice.

JZM recommend Castrol GTX Magnatech!

I use Mobil 1 15w/50 in my 993, its changed annually or every 5 - 6k miles. Consumption has always been very little, no problems with running too hot either.

i would change the engine oil and the filters , engine oil is expensive so why not fit filters too ! also the filter under the wheelarch can be prone to corrosion and leak thus losing all the expensive oil !
