996 Milage

Hi,

Just joined the forum and found some very useful information (once you cut through the 993 or 996 passion! )

I am looking for some specific advice on mileage and depreciation on an early 996.

Background - I am looking to buy a 98 or 99 996 C2 coupe. My budget is up to £30k. I need the car for every day use and will be putting up to 20K miles a year on it. I would be looking to change the car every couple of years.

I am getting mixed messages.

Some of the specialist dealers say that mileage doesn't matter and that 200K cars are as good as 50K cars. However, they are typically selling the higher mileage cars and so have a vested interest.

I have seen on this forum and in other places, cars with 90K plus miles on them referred to as 'nails' (not sure what this means but I guess its not good!)

Does anyone have any experience of trying to sell a 996 with 90K plus miles on it? I would be interested to know what the dealers are saying when they are buying high mileage cars and whether they are still as positive about them.

Should I look to spend up to my limit and get as low mileage as possible? Or should I spend as little as possible on a car that already has say 75K on it?

Slightly off topic, but if a car has done say 50K miles without any RMS issues, does this mean it’s a good ‘un?
Or does it mean that you have RMS issues to look forward to?

Sorry for the long winded message but any advice gratefully received.

Many thanks

Peter

Hmm, a full reply to this sort of query could be 500 words-plus... But IMHO:

A good, well-looked after car will do the mileage no problem.

Big miles will mean BIG depreciation. But then this is on rather a supercar, so you've got to expect that. And the cost of high-milegae Porsche motoring overall will probably be lower than on a similar car.

Most dealers won't want to look at anything with over 100K on it.

50K miles with no RMS: future problems unlikely. Not sure about total engine failure, but suspect the risk is minimal. 2002-onwards cars likely to be better RMS, etc wise.
