Oil Pressure Gauge

I just bought a 1988 3.2 at the weekend and it's my first Porsche. On the second day of ownership the oil pressure gauge has started to play up by first twitching between min and max very quickly and then staying at the top of the scale the entire time that the engine is running. Is there any way of testing the sender unit so that I can determine whether it is this that is faulty or the gauge.

I would say this is normal - to test the sender - start the car, go for a longish drive (30 mins) and then let it sit idling for 3 mins - the needle should stay in one place.

Do a search - this has been covered before.

Good luck with your car.

good car the 3.2 carrera if it was not the gauge it would be very smoky or low on power or even smell oily or go bang so its the gauge

i disagree - with my 3.2 the pressure gauge would at high speed running drop down to Zero.

Best thing is to get is checked by a garage.

Hi,

Seems to be a little confusion in some of the replies I think maybe Warren M is thinking of oil level gauge instead of the pressure gauge.

If your oil pressure gauge is reading max. with ignition on, engine not running, it may be a break or bad connection form the oil pressure sender unit.

Try a serch on

for this topic, a wealth of tech info here.

im just saying that with my car, on a very high speed run, the Pressure needle used to drop to zero. Then slowing down it used to move around the scale quite a bit and would only remain static once the car was idling.

If you rev the engine the pressure needle should move up the scale, upon lowering the revs it should move down the scale.

A friend of mine bought a 3.2 carrera six months ago that developed a similar problem with the needle behaving erraticaly at all times whether at idle or driving. Car drove fine and after taking it to a specialists (Northway) faulty sender unit was diagnosed. Could also be a bad connection on the gauge - try removing it and cleaning connection.

sure you are not on about the oil level gauge the oil pressure gauge is a different one if you have no oil pressure its time for a big bill
the oil level gauge is very erracit with the needle going up and down but the oil pressure gauge rarly moves
