Porsche Air-Con/CC systems are very poor.

Open to peoples comments here, but from what I can gather Porsche are not very good at making Air-Con/CC systems.

They never seem to be that reliable after a few years (when the rest of the car is).

They leak gas so they need to be regassed quite frequently (18-24 months).

Anyone know why this is?

Probably because they're not used = seals dry, leaks etc. System should be switched on and running at least ten minutes a week to keep everything lubed. The AC on my 993 is fine and hasn't needed a regas since I've owned it. Granted it's not as good as previous cars (Box S) but works perfectly and kept me comfortable for four hours driving back from Cornwall yesterday.

My 1996 993 has Climate, and it works fine I do as JonH say's turn it on every few weeks. Its not as cold as my Megane RS225 but its an older car !

Keeps me cool ! 8)

My AC is always switched on, allowing the CC to adjust the temp.

I've had quite a few problems with it in the past few yrs. Had condensor and evaporater replaced, pipe near the engine replace to stop leak. The fan for the temp sensor was also changed.

Now it's working fine but even so, it's not as cool as other modern euro box. Black interior really dosen't help on a hot sunny day.

Echo what the other guys say...

Mine's fine, not as good as the Passatt, and takes a little while to cool the car if it's been standing in the sun... but then it keeps up quite well. a few seconds on the boost setting soon drops the temp.

one of those air cooled design issues.....
but forgiven when we are on track...

Yes, they seem poor, but remember its not that modern a design...others have saoid how their newer/other makes provide great AC but thats to be exoected I suppose.

I can say my Alfa GTV A/C is sub...zero! Much better than my 964, but there are 11 years between them!

Ditto all of the above.

I dont think its due to not being used. Mine is on all the time. Porsche owners tend to understand the basics better so probably wouldn't fall into this category.

People should realise that a working air con will take out the condensation during the winter. Demisting the car very efficiently. Both my gf and my parents are too 'tight' to turn theirs on (extra fuel consumption). With my gf, hers had died completely when I actually tried to use it.

I am guessing, but I feel the Porsche designers do/did not give cc/air con the benefit of their great ideas.

Mine is Ok (993)> it's cold enough to feel it working...although it does make a hissing/sucking sound about every 3 or 4 minutes (coming from the left front wheel well area)

Sounds like a vacuum leak Evil. My 928 does this. Sound just came back a few days ago.

How long does the hissing sound last for?

A hissing sucking sound -2 seconds long-every few minutes :?

The condenser on my 993 has a small leak so I've removed the bumper cover for the AC specialist to get at it. I was amazed at the amount of rubbish in the duct: leaves, twigs, scraps of foil from litter and a very desicated small bird. There is a fair bit of crap in between the fins as well. I expect that the new condenser will make a huge difference in the system's efficiency as heaven only knows how effective the condenser was at ridding the system of heat.

Cleaning the AC condenser and its duct (and ditto for the oil cooler) probably ought to be done every few years just like cleaning the headlamp lenses on a 993.

Can only say that the 996 Air con is as cold as a polar bears bum when you need it. Admittedly a more recent car but I think they put some effort in this time
