996 Engine Survey

Hello everybody...I've been reading with interest (alarm?!) at the thread about the 996 engine problem and Porsche's response to it.

Rather than continuing on that same post, I thought it would be interesting (and scientifically worthwhile) to ask 996 owners on this forum what problems (if any) they've had with their own cars.

To make it accurate, please reply with the following info:

1. What model (and whether a 3.4 or 3.6 engine)

2. Age (Model year and registration year e.g. 1999 on 'S' plate)

3. Mileage covered to date

4. Original Engine?

5. If original engine, any major mechanical problems, what was done, how much and did Porsche GB help out financially?

6. If NOT original engine. What mileage did it fail at? How much was the bill to fix it?! Did Porsche GB assist financially?

7. Any other comments thats are relevent.

If we get enough responses to this, it may help people in the future decide whether or not to buy a 996: it will (hopefully!) reassure those 996 owners (myself included) as to the likelyhood or being financially "spanked" in the future by their car! And maybe, it might help
Dr Mahen Nadarajah
in his battle with Porsche GB with his own car.

5. No problems, but I have only just bought the car. None of the paperwork with it suggests anything otherwise.

Previous Porsche:

1. C4 - 3.4

2. 1998 'S'

3. 57000 on purchase, 72000 on sale

5. RMS failed twice. Oil return bellows twice. Oil separator split. One variocam failed. Both cam cover oil seals failed. All hydraulic tappets replaced due to loud ticking on both banks. 1 oil scavenge pump failed. Water pump vanes failed. Loud knock on tickover was diagnosed as the beginning of little end bearing failure. Regarding peripheral sensors - MAF failed, both O2 sensors failed, crank position sensor failed.

Otherwise totally reliable.....!!!!!!!!

5. Noisy alternator bearing - being replaced under warranty tomorrow

7. 3.6 as good as the 3.4 is crap. Loads more torque. MUCH better mpg. Slightly more top end. Doesn't feel like it's about to explode....

5. If original engine, any major mechanical problems, what was done, how much and did Porsche GB help out financially? - RMS changed at 12000 (warranty). It's having a service next week so watch this space for any other problems/warranyt issues.

7. Any other comments thats are relevent - All four alloy wheels are starting to bubble and this is being looked at next week. The PCM unit is unreliable and has a mind of its own which is apparently due to the fibre optic network in the car (!). I've had my share of problems but doesn't every car have problems?

6. REPLACEMENT ENGINE AT 110,000

7. WORK CARRIED OUT BY PREVIOUS OWNER, PRESUMED HEAD GASKET GONE ENGINE REPAIRED COSTING APPROX. 3K BUT AFTER REPAIRS OIL WAS FOUND IN COOLANT SO ENGINE WAS THEN REPLACED WITH 60K MILE COSTING 6K.

So far 11 cars reported on, and 4 RMSs/engine replacements. Not a representative sample but not encouraging.

Decompressing should change his moniker to 'Depressing'.

I agree Maxy, not what you'd call 'good odds' when the cost of fixing it seems to be on the wrong side of 3 grand!

5. In for 48K service yesterday.
Porsche called me today.
RMS just about to start leaking (oil buildup).
High-pitch horn needs replacing. Fortunately these 2 are covered by the extended warranty (already paid for itself).
Fanbelt needs replacing, as do front discs, and soon the front tyres as well.

7. I knew that Porsche service can get costly, but ouch!
However, when I drive it, it is easy to forget!
