seen these on ebay..

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7962978716&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT

and would appear to be the real deal and for £200 +pp are worth going for... (esp as the volume that the sellor wants to shift and that the price had dropped on each following auction)

hopefully they are as easy to fit as it is suggested.. although it's ebay (!) it certainly beats paying £450 for the same basic kit from a Porsche specialist !

and they appear to have the H1 6000k bulbs to suit the 993..... (8000k is too coloured)

well I bought these....

and FINALLY got around to fitting them after 4 months... (although I have been waiting to borrow a 22mm drill bit from a friend ! well that is my 4 month delay excuse anyway!)

but once I had figured out how to merge the earth wires (10 minutes) then fitting took all of 20 minutes !

just awaiting the darkness to see the real result !

T
hen God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the heavens to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs and seasons, and for days and years; and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heavens to give light on the earth"; and it was so.

having these real 6000k HID xenons fitted is kind of like that !

I would disagree, based on the information that I have seen . . .

unless i have missed something ?but going on the Official Dept of Transport Document.. as per below..

I have self levelling adjustment, I have headlamp washers, the bulbs are of legal spec and so is the alignment and it is also not an MOT failure, as it just passed its MOT today with the xenons fitted. .

and dare I add that certain members of the 993 PCGB have also had them fitted. . .so what have I missed ?

______________________________________ from The Department of Transport......... The situation for Gas Discharge (HID High Intensity Discharge) (commonly known as Xenon) headlamps is complex. I attach links to the Road Vehicle Lighting Regulations 1989 which regulate the situation in the UK. Under these Regulations Xenon headlamps are not mentioned and therefore they are not permitted according to the strict letter of the law. However you will be well aware that new vehicles have Xenon headlamps. This is because they comply to European type approval Regulations. The UK cannot refuse to register a vehicle with a European type approval. These are to ECE Regulation 98 (for the Xenon headlamps which are tested on a rig in a laboratory) and ECE Regulation 48 (Lighting Installation on the vehicle). For the aftermarket, a used vehicle cannot obtain type approval because it is only applicable for new vehicles. However we feel that saying "Xenon is banned in the aftermarket" would not be reasonable. Instead we should make analogies with new vehicles. It would be reasonable to require Xenon in the aftermarket to meet the same safety standards as on new vehicles. The same level of safety should apply. Therefore a Xenon headlamp sold in the aftermarket should: 1. be type approved to ECE Regulation 98 as a component. 2. when fitted to the vehicle should enable ECE Regulation 48 to be complied with (although no government inspection will take place). 3, Comply with RVLR as far as "use" is concerned. In practice this means: 1. The headlamp unit (outer lens, reflector, bulb) shall be type approved to ECE 98 and be "e-marked" to demonstrate this. That can only be done by the headlamp supplier - Hella, Valeo etc. who must test the headlamp in an independent laboratory. 2. Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension - some expensive estate cars have "self-levelling suspension" and that is adequate). Also the dipped beam must stay on with the main beam. 3. The headlamp must be maintained in good working order, kept clean, and aligned/adjusted correctly like any other headlamp. _____________________________________________

I agree that the letter of the law is a little confusing! Technically they should be 'self leveling' i.e. no intervention at all required - they should go up and down continuosly with bumps and things..... 993's equipped with them as standard don't have a level adjustment.

Regardless of that, I'm gonna get a set! No point having 400+bhp if you can't drive in the dark!

so then does that mean you are going to amend your previous statement ? in view that they are in fact legal ?

NO, it's the self leveling thing.

I personally think that 993 headlights in standard form should be made illegal!

Migration info. Legacy thread was 31837

that was the grey area.."Once fitted to the vehicle it must have headlamp cleaning and self-levelling (which can be for the headlamp or can be in the vehicle suspension"

but I believe that this is another case that the DoT recognise the after-market and the demand for xenons....

they are very worth while ! you won't be disappointed !

Just to add to the confusion - I stand corrected - but we're both wrong!

LEGALITY NOTES ON ROAD LEGALITY AND QUALITY OF OUR HID :

  • Both versions of our HID systems are DOT approved, MOT approved and fully E-compliant in all safety, E.M. emmission and performance specifications. As far as we are aware these are the only HID kits on the market that meet all these requirements.

    [list:pVv81lvuFV]
    This makes our kits ROAD
    LEGAL
; there is a lot of misinformation regarding the legality of HID systems fitted to cars without headlamp power wash and rear axle self levelling ...these are only an E.U.
    legal[/b:pVv81lvuFV] requirement on
Xenon[/b:pVv81lvuFV] systems fitted to NEW cars AT THE FACTORY PRODUCTION STAGE . [/b:pVv81lvuFV]
    [list:pVv81lvuFV]
HID systems fitted as aftermarket accessory DO NOT REQUIRE the car to have power wash or self levelling ; even the DOT get this wrong sometimes .... our expensive lawyers did not !

as I said they are legal.........

so you can either stay in the dark or join the light

LOL! Well on the basis of the posts above, I'm seriously tempted to get a set. But is this the kit for which you have to stuff ballast resistors or something up in your wheelarches packed in bubble-wrap, and they can get hot and ignite/explode and turn your gorgeous 993 to toast and stuff? (I've seen dire warnings posted here and elsewhere.)

Or should I just go down to my local modshop and get some bright lbulbs with a blue tint Saxo/Corsa-style? (I think the cool look is the best bit.)
