993 Clutch life

Advice much appreciated.

I have a near mint 1996 993 which has only 18,000 miles on it. Mileage is correct as it has a FPMDSH and i have known of the car since it was new. When i bought the car 2 years ago it had been laid up for about 3 years and had covered only 11k miles.

Problem i have is that the clutch definitley feels as though it needs replacing. I find this suprising and wondered if the symptoms i have experinced - mainly very limited pedal travel for the clutch to bite - could be caused by other problems such as slave cylinder problems or similar due to car being laid up for an extended period???

Local specialist agrees it is odd, but sees $ rolling past his eyes. He also suggests i may ride the clutch. I can categorically, totally deny this and know that i do not. (Good driver training and a brief fling with a red italian tought me not to!!)

Question is really 'could my clutch be worn after 11k miles?' as since then driving has been 90% on French traffic free roads...

All comments and suggestions appreciated!

Hmmm. Seems unlikely. Clutch operation more like, I'd have thought. But I'm no technician. So, over to 911UKers who are...

Like the sound of a fling with a red Italian - especially if it's not a car...

inactivity could be the problem, cars like to be driven to be kept well lubed etc. If you are in Jersey then I don't suppose you have a great deal of specialists to choose from.

mind you look on the bright side if your clutch has gone you can put in an RS clutch and lwf

well if the pedal is soft then it is prob' the clutch... but as you say it could be a host of other technical issues from the effects of the car doing nothing for such a long time, a specialist or OPC could find & fix

not sure about the effects of time but I though these last 40-60k miles ? so based on the mileage and driving the other options are worth checking up on....

I'm guess ing that you no longer have warranty cover....

although didn't think they were SO much £££ to change...

keep in touch on how it goes !

I would suggest you first look on the Rennlist 993 Forum website and do a search on 'clutch pedal hang up' or similiar.

At such a low mileage and based on your described experience, it is likely to be a problem with the clutch slave cylinder - easily and more importantly, cheaply fixed.

Given the mileage of the car and your knowledge of its history, I would have the hydraulics associated with the clutch looked at first. It is possible that the system just needs bleeding or has a small leak.
