Porsche Running Costs

Has anyone ever actually tried to work out what they spend to run their pride and joy? I'm trying to convince my missus that a ten-year-old 993 actually makes more economic sense than, say, a 3-series beemer etc. Do I even vaguely have a case or is this just a blatant lie that I'm spinning because I NEED a 911?

So, what's is costing you (excluding petrol): servicing, tyres, spares, Insurance, depreciation, engine rebuilds!?

I've had mine for about a year now and its cost me for 2 front tyres, a full alignment, a motorsound airbox, a small oil leek fixed, a set of Carrera 02 18 inch rims. These last two items wernt really necessary but you know how it is.

Havent needed a service yet cos i dont do many miles.

your biggest argument is that nearly all the depreciation is done.

If its the car you want then get one, cos while you drive around in your beemer you wont be happy.

As much as I'd love to have the 993 as a second car for sunny weekends, that's definitely not going to wash with 'er indoors! So, if you're using it as a daily driver is it going to ramp up the costs?

Any other daily driving 993s out there or are they all cherished cars with carpeted (Sarbs!) and heated (Hendo!) garages with Evian in their washer bottles (come on, don't tell me you haven't thought about it!!)?

Mine is a daily driver - its just that my round trip commute is about 25 kilometers. It gets driven all year round, snow, rain, sun etc.

James

a real life comparison featuring everyday folk

My 911

993 Bought Nov 2002 23,000 Value Nov 2004 21,000 Depreciation 2,000

Service 1 (4 tyres discs/pads) 1,200 Service 2 400 Insurance X2 1,600 Tax X2 330 Total 'cost' 5,530 or 2,765 per year

Compared to.................................... My Range Rover 2001 2.5 DHSE

Bought Mar 2004 28,000 Value Jan 2005 23,000 Depreciation 5,000

Service 1 450 Insurance X1 750 Tax X1 165 Total 'cost' 6,635 or 6,635 per year

As those attending the last curry night will remember, if you take my 4.6 hse Range rover for the year before, and I get my annual range rover cost closer to £10,000.00

You'd find that once you've got the car sorted of any niggling problems, actual running cost is comparable or less than other half decent cars. The expensive part is the upgrades and mods, trackdays etc etc. But then you only live once.

Ok so it's not a daily driver and not a 993, but in 4 years and 46,000 miles I've found the following:

Insurance - started at £900 now £600 even though I'm in a worse postcode

Brake pads last around 20,000 but the rears wore out first after 15,000 miles - must be pressing the pedal wrong :)

I've only bought (£400) one set of tyres in August 2001 !!

MPG is low teens in London, 23 ish in a mix of rural/urban roads and around 27 on a motorway.

Ongoing it costs about £1k a year for servicing plus any bits that have gone wrong. Although that's after spending £7k getting it sorted 3 years.

My 993 is the best fun daily driver I have ever had and the lack of real depreciation and average costs make it one of the best financially.

Just get one!
