I have a 97 993 twin turbo that now smokes bad at start up?? Right bank only. Car has 35K and no mods. Drive it a mile and all is well, no more smoke and runs great!! The oil was just changed by the dealer. The level is correct. Help?????

Does it do it every time? I have a 97 993 Turbo too, and sometimes there is a cloud of smoke on startup if I've left it for a week or more. I've read that this isn't anything to worry about though, as it's all to do with the position of the piston rings letting a small amount of oil leak through into the cylinders. Only happens on 'flat' engines, but I've never seen a Subaru do it...

Does it when the car sits for four days or more. only right bank. I was told cracked rings. Does this make sence

The rule of thumb does seem to be if it smokes only on start up then don't worry about it. I am sure there are exceptions to this rule, but if it is not smoking under load I don't think you have a serious problem. I am no expert though and it might be worth speaking to your local specialist.

Can anybody help. I recently bought a Ruf converted 993 TT. Year '97 with less than 9k on clock. I drove it down to London from the North and had no problems. The next day I started it up and is now blowing smoke from RHS exhaust pipe. The pevious owner says he had same problem with an oil filter located on the RHS which when replaced, stopped the smoking. Any thoughts ?

I've also got a 97 993 TT (mileage 24k) and it does the same, plenty of smoke on startup!!

I't also started after an oil change and I've lived with it now for the best part of a year. The engine always runs sweet after a minute or two, but from cold you can't see the car for smoke!

My local OPC looked at it and put it down to the turbos sucking in oil into the intercooler (from an over fill, they said) .

Always curious I un-coupled the two massive pipes that go into the intercooler to have a look. I could see there was oil lining these pipes. If you clean them out, I found that the amount of smoke on start up reduces significantly.

But it doesnt go away completely...

Thanks for all the help. I'm taking the car in this week. Will keep you posted on the end result.

Gareth

Hello again,

Re: Smoking exhaust, right bank only:

This is a great story which sadly cost me time and unecessary expenditure. I rang Ruf in Germany to get the name of a Companies which order Ruf parts for servicing etc. I went with the one based in Chelsea, London. I had been told by the previous owner that he had similar problems and all that was needed was a replacement 993 oil filter, this was relayed to the garage where I took the car.

Unfortunately they immediately went for the most expensive option of refurbishing the right bank turbo. After a cost of 1300 pounds, I started the engine at the garage and again it was pouring smoke (exactly as before but three weeks later). You could imagine how I felt - angry being an understatment especially after the mechanic accusing my friend of selling me a defective car. I told them to stop working on the car as had no confidence in them any longer. Shipped car to Porsche Great Britain and had oil filter changed for cost of 100 pounds. No smoking problems evident after this.

The garage in question still insists that it was the turbo at fault, but if that was the case why was it still smoking when I went to pick it up ? Plus why didn't they check the oil filter first and saved me best part of 1300 pounds ? They insist on the turbo being at fault, probably covering their own backs. I haven't mentioned the name of the garage due to forum rules but I am outraged by the service that was given both personally and professionally.

I say name and shame, Gareth.

Can somebody please define name and shame ??

Can somebody also clarify if I have broken forum rules with my last post, I don't appear to have mentioned any specific garage/company.

Thank you.

Personally, I can't believe how calm you sound about it (which is to your credit). Have you paid the £1300 yet? (If not, I would seriously consider whether you ought to, without first having taken legal advice).
