3 weeks ago I brought a 02 996 c4s coupe from main dealer but have noticed quite alot of smoke pouring out when starting it wether warm or cold and also it can happen when i am high up in the rev range, it only does this occasionally. I was worried as I thought this could be the start of something serios so i contacted my dealer who arranged for the car to be taken in . the next day they told me it is a very common that 996's smoke and that they could find nothing wrong with the car even though it bellowed out smoke from a cold start when they came round to pick it up am I being lied to and has any one else had this problem!!!

I do have a 2001 996 C2 cabrio, even if mine has the 3.4 L engine and I assume your have the 3.6 L engine, its does not smoke at all.

Of course in the very cold days you may see a little of steam but not smoke.

So depens of the type of smoke (burn oil smoke can be recognised by the smell) but if the smoke is a lot could be a problem with the engine.

You should verify if there is a high engine oil comsumption, the engine oil type (eventually change it and the oil filter and put on new Castrol oil) or check the quality of the petrol you use (even if I do not think is due to the petrol as you asid it only smokes at startup). Anyways you should first try to identify the type of smoke or ask for a second opinion.

No smoke without fire - I would take it to another main dealer for a second opinion

Mine does not smoke

Hi Simon,

I've heard of this problem occuring on the turbo version, where it's caused by oil contamination of the air intakes. Over filling the engine oil causes the problem.

It's easily solved by cleaning out the oil of the air intakes.

Have you checked the oil level?

Mine definatly does not smoke. When looking from mine I did come across a tired 996 c4 that smoked on start up when the guy evetually started/thrashed it. Walked away.

It is not smoking all the time, which I would say it better news than if it did. I don't think any modern car should smoke (oil smoke which is blue'ish) as it would not pass emmisions mot testing.

Which dealer did you take it to ? Get a second opinion from another Porsche specialist.

Mine smokes from time to time when I start it, doesn't seem to be a regular problem and once the car has fired up there appears to be no more at any other time :?
