A/c evaporator

The car's been at Parr since Friday for a 24k mile service. Among the handful of things that need sorting is a biggie: the a/c evaporator is corroded and needs replacement. Cost will be around £1300, partly because of the replacement hardware but also because the fuel tank has to come out to get to it. No choice said the man, if you want working a/c.

Options:1. Do without. Rather not, plus it affects the resale value.

2. Leave it for the moment. What's the point - it needs to be fixed sometime.

3. Get it fixed - think of the money but at least it will be working.

Any other options anyone can think of - eg cheaper places/sources of hardware?

I expect a lot of that cost to be labour, but its worth checking parts prices.

You might find a better price from a local supplier (non porsche) such as a radiator specialist, they can often help with air con components, or from a breaker, or have a look in the States, more cars, more ac, more choices. Worth a few minutes looking if you can save....

Thanks Adrian - I appreciate the input. However, it does occur to me that I might be better off just getting it recharged and living with a recharge every year. Cheaper than a complete evaporator unit....

Hi,

I've used this parts supplier a few times, but I've collected the parts while in the US. They are considerably cheaper than the UK.

Here's the link to your evaporator:

not bad at £215 I think...you just need to pick it up..got any friends going on holiday? I get my parts sent to whatever hotel I'm staying at. There are other companies too, all roughly the same price.

Hope you find a solution,

Don.

Hey Manek, how was the Parr service experience? Been thinking about going there as its local and reputable.

I just got back. Friendly and helpful, and a reasonable price for what they did. Thorough too: they found stuff I didn't know was wrong, such as the curtain under the rear spoiler being broken.

They also remarked that the 'rear nuts & bolts for the rear exhaust silencers are rusting away' -- would these be the ones I'd have to undo/replace if I installed for the RSR mufflers, can anyone tell me?

I went there mainly because of their experience in setting up the geometry on these cars -- mine was slightly out, nothing to worry about but it put my mind a rest. They've sharpened the response a bit for track day work: a bit more negative camber on the front, a bit more toe-in on the rears. We'll see what happens next Wednesday at Silverstone.

And Jonathan -- I spotted your car there. Shame about the damage...
