After 3 month of 993 ownership, which I have enjoyed thoroughly , I have a couple of questions.

The warning light for the airbag doesn't go out until about 1 minute after starting up. All the other warning light go out straight away......is this a problem?

At 110 mph on the straight, there is a slight vibration in the steering wheel. Can this be remedied by allignment or am I looking at something sinister?

On freezing cold mornings when I leave the engine running whilst scraping some ice off with the demister on full, the fan under the bonnet comes on intermittently.......2 secs on, 2 secs off.....normal?

Hope you guys can put my mind at ease.

Cheers, Martin

Can't say that I've experienced any of your probs before Nitrus, but this doesn't neccesarily mean that they are anything to worry about.

I'd imagine that the airbag light will need a specialist or dealer to give it a diagnostic, vibration at that speed could be slightly unbalanced wheels or slight tracking error. Getting the wheels balanced would be worth the relative inexpense to see if that cures it (be careful testing at 110mph though!).

As for fan, mine stays on constantly and only changes speed (slightly) with engine loads.

Martin,

There was a recall, or product improvement program as Porsche call them, for the intermitant airbag warning problems. I think it was for later model year cars (MY'97?) only. Best check with your local OPC.

I go along with Dunc on the steering vibration, more likely to be wheel balance than alignment. Another possibility is track rod end rubber bushes, these seem to wear quite quickly as I had to have mine replaced at only 24K miles.

Can't really help you with the fan, but 993's eat batteries and a slightly low voltage battery can cause all sorts of wierd electrical problems! The first sign of cold weather is typically when they start playing up.

Come to think of it, your airbag problem could also be battery related?

The airbag warning light thing happened to my car. The local independent reset the system and it hasn't happened since. I don't think it portends anything.

I had an annoying vibration on my 993 (18" wheels) Had the wheels balanced at the local OPC and guess what... no difference!

However, have just had car serviced at JZ Machtech, and they re-balanced the wheels and found one tyre had it's heavy spot (something all tyres have apparently) was put 180 degrees out from where it should have been (in relation to the valve on the wheel)... They put the tyre on correctly, balanced the wheels correctly, and hey presto... not the slightest vibration!!

My car was also slightly twitchy at higher speeds, so I had an alignment done too, and it is now a different car... steady as a rock... fantastic!

JZ Mactech seem to be a really good company , that's attention to detail. Nitrus if you take your car to a hi street type tyre firm stand over them while they do the job . Make sure you know the correct jacking points for your car and insist they use a soft socket on your wheels or similar.

Fan 'cycling' on and off...

If you have the demister button on, it also introduces the air con, and the 'cycling' I have experienced before. There is some type of 'resistor?' behind the right front h/lamp which fails, falls apart, this will cause that sympton. You can replace yourself, but check out the tech boards or ask a techie first. I have had it replaced on a few 993 but not physically done it myself. To be sure a facility with a Bosche hammer can test the heating for you.
