I've had my '97 C4 coupe for about 6 weeks now, and I absolutely love it. It's done 52k, had 3 owners, and is in brilliant nick for a 6 year old car. In fact, each previous owner of the car had kept every invoice/mot/etc etc and put them all in an A4 ring binder... so the car's history is amazingly complete.

As a new (as in first time) 911 owner.. there were however quite a few peculiarities that initially troubled me, but several of which were immediately clarified by trawling through this website.

A few remain:

On rough roads, the car does make a few rattles and clunks: there is one particular 'clunk' that comes from the near side door, (there being mostly potholes on the near side of our rural roads!) The door fit, and hinges etc are all secure and correctly adjusted, so perhaps it's something inside the door? Any one had similar?

The oil filler spout appears to leak: I've not yet had to put any oil in, but on checking the oil for the first time, I noticed some spillage around the spout. I wiped it all off, but it gradually comes back, so must be leaking.... any quick solutions known?

One point negotiated on purchase, was that the clutch did judder a little on release (only from stationery) and it was agreed that a clutch would probably be needed in 2 or 3 thousand miles. It's fine to drive once used to it, but the pedal action is quite heavy... is that normal, or just a symptom of the tired clutch?

So far, other than those things, and an alarm problem that is to be sorted out by Hamilton Palmer, all is marvellous. I've waited a long time to have one of these cars... and I'm not disppointed. The radio on mind is not that good, but I can genuinely say that I prefer to listen to the engine/exhaust, so rarely use it.

I know it's a matter of taste, but I am so glad I went for a 993 and not an early 996. I definately prefer the body shape, and I really like the traditional 'big round dial' dashboard of the 993. It's still the '911' that I always wanted when I was younger.

Will. Are you sure the clunking noise isn't the front suspension?

Re. the clutch, it should be nice and light. If you bought it from a dealer I would suggest taking it back and getting them to check it.

No, clunking is definately from door, and will whip interior panel off at weekend to have a look.

Do suspect clutch action is related to wear, but will have it checked by local dealer when in for next service. It's not so heavy that it effects driving, but in a slow moving traffic jam, it would become good excercise!!!

If I where you I would get the clutch done at a Porsche Specialist - They will probably sort rattle out as part of the job and overall do a better job than the main dealer for less money. Autofarm are not going to be to far for you for a job of that nature.

This could be due to the dry sump being "over full". Air cooled 911's don't like being over filled with oil, when the oil reaches it's normal operating temp or above it expands within the system and if the system is too full it comes out the way it went in. There are two ways to check this, either from the dash gauge or the dip stick, the car must be on a level surface and more importanty the oil must be at the normal operating temp. Tip, when filling only fill to just over the 3/4 mark.

I sounds like your clutch is on it's way out, standard 964 and 993 clutches should be light when engaging and releasing, also the engage/release point should not be a "floating" point, meaning the clutch bites after being released. If this still occurs after a clutch change there is a clutch pedel release bracket mod availble from Porsche. This is cheap and simple to fit....and it works! Also it's worth booking it in for a clutch change. Porsche clutches let go when they feel like it...usually in the middle of nowhere!!

Welcome to the forum, your clutch problem could be the pedal slave cylinder thingy, they often get dirt and stuff in and can become stiff, search the rennlist or p-car.com for a diy fix before getting a new clutch.

If you do need anew clutch it is well worth considering an RS flywheel and clutch. Mind you that is the start of a slippery slope.

Hi Will

Change the clutch when you can - my last 993 had it done and the difference was amazing. Went from very heavy to light action, better biting point, smoother pull away - made all the difference. If you know its on its way out, you'll be glad you changed it when you feel the difference. Except for cost of course.

PS Good to be back chaps - been away on top notch hols and missed loads. Too many post numbers going back, but get back to the UK and straight into loads of F1 work, so its not all bad. Keep 'em coming...

Firstly welcome......I would do a little more investigation before rushing off to force loads of pound notes into the hands of a Porsche mechanic. Stiff clutches are usually mechanism related ie cables, hydraulics, bushings, springs etc. So double check what's relative to the 993 (I don't know it's quirks so well as others here) . A dodgy clutch unit usually manifests itself as slippage or juddering Try Autofarm or JZ Mactec, they are both pretty good.

Have just taken my 993 to JZ Machtech for 24k service and for clutch to be looked at. They say it's fine, or at least isn't on the way out yet.... the juddering, which they agree, is there, but only noticeable when moving off from rest, will be most likely due to the two piece flywheel getting a bit weak. They advise that it's not likely to let me down and that I should get quite a few 1000 miles from it yet. They also felt it wasn't excessively heavy (the pedal action) so perhaps I just need to do some exercise or something!!!

Either way, I feel happier that someone with 'the knowledge' has had a look, and am now a lot happier. And of course it means I have postponed spending £1500 or so for at least a while (clutch and flywheel)

I had a few other little queries, most of which were perhaps due to my being a first time 911 owner, and they answered or rectified all of those efficiently.... They seem a very good outfit.

Glad to hear you don't have to part with any hard-earned just yet. JZ have an excellent reputation and although they are quite pricey, for a specialist, the peace of mind that they will do a good job is probably worth it.
