996 problem

My 1998 996 is suffering from rust around the door catch on the driver's side doorframe. I can also see the first stages of rust around the passenger side door catch.

What's causing this? Would any repair work be undertaken under the Porsche 10 year body guarantee? If not, would I be better off taking it to a specialist repairer?

Thanks!

This is a known fault, although I thought with Boxsters. It is due to the fact that the door catch is mounted directly to the body work of the car without any sort of softer washer. Over time the paint cracks around the catch, water gets in and then it rusts. Repair should definitely be overed by the body work guarantee. I think they fit a new part to the catch e.g. a washer of some description.

Anyone have first hand knowledge of this?

James

James is right, Steve McHale of JZ Machtech had an early 996 that had "spidering" under the paint around the door catch, covered by Porsche warranty, they retro-fit a polyeurethane gasket between the catch and body.
