Go and buy one that is!

Looking at a facelift 7k 2001 C2 Manual with oodles of extras, pcm, heated seats, natural leather, sound kit, cdchanger, psm, litronic, etc etc, speed yellow, painted dials, (but no funny aerokits to spoil the lines).

Any thoughts on the correct price to pay (its bought from a garage) but bear in mind that waiting lists for C2's and C4's are quoted in weeks now, and that the two porsche garages I went into "had a slot" for me real soon....

anything i should know about these beasties??

in your experience how much approx will servicing this thing cost me???

I don't know much about 996s to be honest (out of my price range!) but personally I think they look a lot better with "funny aerokits" - the GT3 one anyway. Adds a bit of character to an otherwise dull-looking car. Given that most cars don't have them I guess I am in the minority though.

There a loads of guys here with 996s so I am sure they will pipe up with something more helpful.

My guess on the price would be a good bit less than list price. C4S 's seem to go for about their list price 2nd hand (those few that are ont he 2nd hand market already) or even £5k+ less than list, and they seem to be the model of choice at the moment.

Well it sounds like a pretty full spec, but one of the earlier facelift models. I would say between £55 and £57k. Servicing is cheaper than previous 911s....dont ask me why....something to do with the varioram system I think.

Only extra you need is the sports exhaust. Available slots due to instabilty in high sector jobs and the impending arrival of the 997. 993 a better short term purchase as 996's will definately take a big hit when the 997 arrives.

Did 993's take a price hit when the 996 came out? I guess the air-cooled vs water-cooled thing might have protected 993 prices for a while.

i'm not a fan of the 993, specially as it is getting on in years. if the 996 takes a hit with the arrival of the 997, then logically the 993 will more or less drop off the map, surely??

i think the question of 993 vs 996 is difficult to answer, especially on a "specialist" forum like this! its a bit like going to a tvr forum and asking a question about reliability. They don't understand the question.

i don't actually care how the engines cooled, i'm more interested in it as an integrated package. will it get me to my home town (330miles) on the motorway without a screaming headache (thank you BMW Z3) and will it perform on the twisty stuff on the one weekend a month i go somewhere b-road-ish. (sorry SLK)

and will it convey me through London Town in style without overheating at the lights (goodbye TVR).

and i'm not a fan of body kits except the C4S and Turbo which are wide-hips sexy.

good point about the exhaust - i'll remember to ask the nice garage man that question.

servicing?? i suppose i'll have to grin and bear it!! i saw a turbo bill for £1100 for a 10k service so i take it the C2 will be a fraction less. ("Oh goody, only £800 for a 10k service...)

depreciation: i'm assuming around £5k per year if i do <10k miles, ie sell the ***** in two years for a nearly new 997 having maintained my deposit. these finance things can be construed as "renting", but sod it, i'm only renting this space on the planet for 70 years (maybe longer!) so lets not get picky about it! :wink:

and to the person what suggested 55-57 the vendors asking 56 so spot on my son!

i'll try for a discount as the person who said the top job shortage is hurting sales is also on the money!!

Jono, I think I read recently that the service costs are nearer £500 than £800. Not sure where I read it, but it compared 964 vs 993 vs 996 service costs. If I see it again I will let you know.

ahhh.... not far from my Merc Dealers belief that my slk should be around £450 then....

Mercedes garage - glass of water = £10.

actually i learn quick and supplied my own synthetic oil and saved about £30.

in this part of the world the 993 may be allways seen as the most desirable, but in the wider world (the one that sets the values) the long term trend will be like any other car. however don't let me stop you paying whatever you like for your preferred transport... :wink:

its allways worth remembering that the bloody things are actually mass produced in factories and not get too involved in the emotional side! this emotion is used by dealers to extract more cash from end-users. (my goodness, i'm hard hearted... :eek: ).

still i'm looking forward to a decision in which my head agrees with my heart...
