I am looking to buy a 92 C2 964. I am told that the only fault is that the speedo doesnt work till the car is warmed up. Has anyone heard of or suffered from such a fault. If so, is it expensive to fix?

Thanks for any help.

Hi,

Don't know about the speedo problem, but good on you for going for a 964! (don't be put off by all the horror stories the doom and gloom brigade put about). Any Porsche can be a financial nightmare IF you don't buy the right one. Yes, they are more expensive to service, but there you go, thats just the way it is! Get a pre-purchase inspection done on whatever you buy, even if its from a dealer.

Love mine...

Marc

Hi Cooper. I am afraid I have not heard of this problem either. Hopefully some one else has! Just posting this so you don't think we are all ignoring you :)

Cheers, James

Thanks for the replies.

You mention an Inspection. The car I am going to look at tomorow is in Hastings, does anyone know of a decent inspection bloke from around that area.

Thanks again, great site!

Hopefully I will have some tales of my own soon.

Also, it is a C4, would anyone recommend against these for a C2. I am not too interested in getting the back end out etc at this stage, is the C4 a good choice??

Cooper

Out of the box a C4 understeers a lot more than a C2 but this can be dialed out with some suspension set up changes (although it will cost you a little bit). On paper it is marginally slower due to the weight and internal resistance of the 4WD system but on the road it will probably be quicker than a C2 90% of the time. Arguably on a track it is a less rewarding drive but my guess this is going to be a daily driver (?) and a C4 is a great choice.

For a PPI you could try the main dealer in Guilford (not ideal as they tend to see more 993s and 996s and a bit of a drive away) or IntaPorsch near Burgess Hill (a search on Google should find their address). I am sure there are other specialists that others here will mention.

Cheers, James

PS Email me if you want more info on the understeering issue - lots has been written about it. In fact go to
www.porsche964.co.uk
and have a poke about there. It is the bible on 964s

Thanks for the info. I am struggling to locate IntaPorsch however.

Good link though.

I will be using it everyday at least till winter. I may be looking at a C2 on Friday also, so I can compare.

Thanks again.

I was there a few months ago but can't find the damn address. I seem to remember finding it orginally in an issue of 911 & Porsche World so I will trawl through my back issues and see if I can find it. What I have found already though is the mobile number for the owner (but I can't remember his name  ) : 07801 563170

I'll get back to you if I find the address.

Cheers, James

OK. I found an advert for Intaporsh (note, no "c"....oops)

Their address is:

Intaporsh MotorsportOld London RoadSayers CommonW SussexBN6 9HZ

Tel: 01273 834241

While they are a Porsche specialist they are not a particuarly well known one so although I have suggested you use them I do so more because i don't know anyone else in that area rather than because they are particularly good. Better a PPI by them, though, than no PPI at all.

Cheers, James

Me again. Does anyone know of a place that repairs speedos, or does anyone have one I could borrow for a day or 2 (will pay for privilege).

I dont want to buy a new one and find the speedo was not the problem.

Cheers.

Aah... the joys of troubleshooting car problems.

I can't help unfortunately. How about getting one from a breaker's yard? Might not be too pricey.
