c4 99 - head gasket

The RAC have looked at a 99 C4 for me.
The coolant is low, which together with emulsified oil in the filter cap and a possible oil leak suggests (apparently) a problem with the head gasket.
Does anyone have any experience of this and the costs of repair should it go wrong?

Should I steer well clear or just adjust the purchase price?

there numerous postings about emulisfied oil in the filler capon 911's people claim it is to do with sort runs and the gunk not being burnt off. I would be tempted to get a OPC PPI or a specialist to take a look at it.

Johnny - you must remeber that this is a 996 we are on about which has water cooling - this is a whole lot different than a bit of condensation in the oil on an earlier 911 - this sounds like a rather poorly Porsche needing many pounds spending on it!

It sounds like rectifying this problem could be very expensive. Even if the gasket is sorted (engine out, strip down, many thousands of punds job) why has it leaked and what else might be wrong with the car.

There are loads of 996's out there. I would walk away and be glad the few quid you spent on the search spared you a wallet-busting nightmare.
