Can anybody help? I've just taken the ancient Blaupunkt radio/cassette out my 1990 Carrera. The object of the exercise was simple enough - to swap it for a Blaupunkt Radio/CD player. Wrong! First of all, the connections on the back were different, not a problem I think, I'll get an adapter. No, can't do that apparently because the speaker output from the old radio/cassette was via an 8 pin DIN plug, which I've subsequently found go's to an amp under the drivers seat.

The only suggestion I've had so far is that the whole thing will need to be rewired!!

Does anybody have any suggestions PLEASE!!!!!

Marc

Phil Raby changed the radio over for a new one in his 964 in 911 & Porsche World not so long ago. He wrote that the connectors are "idenitical to those in old Fords" and he got an adapter from Halfords for £9.99. It was then a straight swap - old stereo for new (he bought a Blaupunkt Woodstock DAB52). I guess it just runs into the old amp. Why would using the old amp be a problem?

I've solved the problem now. The easy way round the problem is to cut the amp out the circuit. If anybody is faced with this problem, my advice is to run new speaker cabling from the head unit down to where the amp is under drivers seat. Remove the amp, and then just join the original speaker cables to the new cabling you've just run down to the drivers seat. The two reaons I decided not to use the amp were:

1. The head unit doesn't need any extra boosting anyway-its got 4x45W which is enough for the sizerating of the speaker system that you can easily get into the car (especially the rear speakers, as they're rectangular 6"x4" which knda limits your choice of replacement). Obviously if you're prepared to spend lots of money and start cutting into the rear shelf this isn't a problem, but I wanted to keep things reasonably original looking.

2. The signal to the amp from the old head unit was low power output, specifically designed as an output for an amp. My newer and more modern Blaupunkt head only has connections for direct wiring to speakers (no pre-amp out) I was concerned about damaging either the amp or more importantly the new speakers.

I'm not an audio specialist (as you can tell), but this seemed the logical way round the problem, and it seems to work fine.

Re the "old-style Ford speaker connections" that Philip Raby refers to, these are the plugs that you will find connecting the original speaker set-up to the amp. The lead from the back of my old head unit, was an 8-pin DIN socket. I started off cutting the plug off thinking I could just utilize this cable for the speakers, but it was only 6-core, so I decided to just pull it out and run proper speaker cabling through instead. Philip Raby was lucky in that it would appear his car wasn't fitted with an amp as standard, hence the "old-style Ford speaker plugs" were fitted directly into the back of his old head unit.

Thanks for looking anyway.

Happy motoring!

Marc
