...apparently, as I don't have this first hand, it's been mentioned in the German magazine "Auto, Motor & Sport". Its concerning the well known problem with the cable insulation melting over time. I guess this is good news as I know of people who have spent £500 having the loom replaced and now it looks like Porsche may be picking up the bill.

I would recommend anyone with a 993 contacting a main dealer and finding out if their car is affected.

Happy new year to everyone!

Phil.

Hi Phil!

Happy New Year!

Do you know which cables are concerned?

A few weeks ago I also learned that the problem of the door hinge was under warranty. Those hinges are braking inside the wing and this is difficult to fix it properly.

JP, I think it's related to the engine area, best to contact a dealer to be sure.

Hi guys here are more infos on that problem:

There has been just a few problem with a bunch of electrical cables in the 993 model. But Porsche decided to recall all 993 built in 94 (R) and 95 (S) and a selected number of model from 96 (T) for a control of the electrical cables around the engine and their replacement if necessary. All early 993 turbos are also concerned.

Normally Porsche should send you a letter of invitation for that check. And it will be totally free of charge!!!

I think, not a lot of car manufacturer would do that for cars approaching 10 years old!

Cheers

JP

Hi Phil

Thanks for the 'heads up' over the recall. I took mine in to get a new key cut and had them check the chassis number. It was still outstanding so she'll be back in next week for the check. Many thanks

This
is a transcript of a letter I sent to Andy Gross MD of PORSCHE GB back in January 02. For some reason he was unable to reply, even though he is able to send me letters in the post inviting me, as a valued customer, to come to the Motor Show, come to open days and corporate days to buy a new car. Their PR man replied, he was not helpful; he obviously had not been to PR school, ever!!

I just wondered what other 911 owners think and should Porsche GB approched on mass?

Mr. Andy Goss

Ref: 933 Engine Wiring Loom

Dear Andy,

With reference to our telephone conversation of 11/12/01, as you requested, my concerns are now confirmed in writing.

I am very surprised that you have not heard about the issues with 911(993) engine wiring loom. It might be worth checking the amount of looms that have been ordered by your distributors and dealers over the last few years. Then ask the question, how many engine wiring looms do other car manufactures order per volume of cars sold.

I am very concerned about these looms failing, to the point of the car becoming "live" though the alternator and in one case the engine bay catching fire!

These are not isolated incidents, at
www.renlist.com
, within their chat room, 993 owners are experiencing these problems.

I too, have experienced major problems with the engine-wiring loom on my 993 where the loom short circuited two brand new batteries and killed my starter motor. The starter motor would just come on when I was driving!!!

Listed are some of the issues I suffered over a six-month period that pointed to a faulty engine-wiring loom on a 993.

These are as follows:-

  • Battery discharges for no apparent reason and not holding charge.

  • Starter still runs after engine has fired up.

  • Starter engages/starts when engine is running while driving.

  • Spark voltage down on scope test.

  • Engine runs lumpy.

  • Engine will not run on 6 cylinders.

  • Engine backfires and pops.

  • Engine down on performance.

  • Difficulty in starting engine.

  • Black smoke from engine when starting.

  • Smell of petrol when starting.
The most serious problem is the wiring-loom can go “live” to the alternator; this is a fire hazard that could happen at any time.

The wiring loom connects from the engine bay junction box to the injectors, starter motor and alternator – the alternator is live at times carrying high current with no fuse protection.

The loom is shielded in a wrap. Cutaway the protective wrap, this will reveal the sheathed cables within, this sheathing will probably be cracked in a “hooped” effect around the core of the cables.
This sheathing is manufactured from the wrong material and “not fit for the purpose” becoming brittle and cracking when hot over a period of time.
This then shrinks revealing the core cables to short out.

This issue seems to affect the earlier non
VarioRam 993's, strangely t
he replacement wiring-loom has a different part number.

Porsche have to recognise this as a grave problem and have to take ownership of the situation before a major incident takes place.

In my particular case, I am, a fanatical Porsche owner and fan of the marque (I am on my 6
th
911) however, I do feel aggrieved that I am financially at a loss, not due to ware and tare or bad driving on my part, but due to wrong materials specified in manufacture. In legal terms “not fit for the purpose”.

As you requested, enclosed are copies of invoices to repair the faults, please note, I have mislaid the two invoices for the batteries, but I am confident, you at Porsche, will know the cost of replacement 993 batteries.

More importantly, as I commented during our conversation, I am very concerned with regards to other loyal Porsche owners happily driving their pride and joys, blissfully unaware of a serious fire risk.

I would like and appreciate compensation to the full amount including the replacement batteries and I would also like to know what strategy Porsche and Porsche Cars (GB) Ltd. would be implementing to remedy the problem out in the field.

I also have in my possession the wiring-loom for your inspection.

Serious problems indeed!

I'm going to speak with Porsche Chiswick later today to see what is their official position on this.

As I mentioned on a previous thread, if it wasn't for this forum, I doubt I would have even known about it. Understandable that my second hand german import would leave Porsche with a bit of a conundrum on where/who to send the re-call advice to. I've spoken to my local official dealer, Lindbrook, at Tonbridge, who will be doing the necessary replacements this weekend.

Peter, your letter to Porsche GB was dated January 2002, Lindbrook were not advised officially from Germany about the recall untill December 2002. Obviously, they didnt start on any corrective measures until January 2003. Having run out of the necessary parts very quickly, I've had to wait a week or so to ensure my pride and joy gets the necessary attention.

I would'nt even begin to guess at the legal issues, but it would seem to me, that the subsequent admission through the re-call, albeit a year after your letter to Porsche GB, should allow you compensation for the cost incurred on what is now a recognised fault.

Peter, as a footnote dont be too surprised about PR people not having been trained in PR. As I have discovered to my concern with M&S, BA, and other lauded firms, those folks have a title that bares no resemblance to the job they do, and if advised to speak to, or receiving correspondence from anyone called PR/Customer Care/help desk etc etc, dont speak to them. It winds you up and more worryingly, it only encourages them.

Hendo,

Who did you speak to at Lindbrook? They'd be the closest OPC to my home address, I was going to take it to Chiswick which is near where I work.

James,

Speak to Denise Campbell on 01732 378 070. She's in charge of warranties/recalls on the service side. She mentioned to me today that the replacement takes a day-ish but that they are stuffed until first week of march. If its to check whether yours needs the work done, she can confirm in a matter of minutes whether its still outstanding from your chassis number.

Hi,

I hate to say this but chassis numbers are a bit hit and miss.

Porsche have released a batch of chassis numbers they feel there are issues with, however I know 993 owners that have had wiring loom problems with cars ranging from 94-97.

So from this is there a problem with the whole production run of 993's?

Are Porsche trying to limit their exposure?

So what is the suggestion? I'm going to ring Denise now to see if my car is in the recall or if the work was already done by a previous owner. If she says that my car is not in the recall 'batch', should I not belive her? What are my options?

At this stage I don't know.

I have a problem that I have now sold my car and I had a specialist order the loom from AFN and replace it - GT1 Chertsey - In fact I think they have replaced up to 6 looms in as many months.

Porsche were not happy that a specialist had completed the work, they were unable to book my car in for 3 weeks. The car was undividable because the starter motor would not stop running when the engine fired up. So the only option was to load it onto the back of a breakdown truck.

Porsche were however very happy to sell an official wiring loom.

This is why we must collate all the issues, identify the cars and their owners, then approach Porsche GB on mass.

Right, spoken to Denise (very helpfu, thanks Hendo  ), she has asked for me to bring the car into her this Saturday to get it checked. If the work is required, she'll order the parts and get me booked in.

Apparantly there is another recall outstanding as well on mine, an AXO3, if anyone knows what that is?!?!?!?
