Hi Everyone,

this is my first visit to this forum and I am basically looking for some advice regarding my first 911.

Maybe its the old mid-life crisis approaching but I have always had a longing for a 911 and its time to say goodbye to my much loved Scooby and trade in the boy racer machine for something with more class. I expect you get plenty of similar queries but here are my main questions

I have approx 40K to spend and want a 996

1) should I go for C2 or C4

2) main dealer, specialist dealer or private sale

3) what add-on extras are really worth looking for

4) How much leeway is there for negotiation on price. Looking around at the prices advertised it is almost as though there is asome price fixing going on. I am amazed at how little variability there is around the country

5) Where is best place to look

I would really appreciate any advice or tales of your own experiences

Hi Roger

£40k should get you a nice 996 no problems. Even better, there are loads out there so take your time, look a lots and find a REALLY good one.

In answer to your questions

1) you will be hard-pressed to notice the difference between a C2 and a C4 at anything other than "balls-out" driving and four-wheel drive is definitely safer in the wet. Try both and see what you feels better to you. Personally, I think a C4 996 makes a lot of sense.

2) Main dealers will be more expensive but will give you a nice warantee - this is the safe, but epensive route. Specialist dealers should be a little cheaper but also give you a nice warantee. Private sale will obviously be the cheapest route but you will need to search around for the perfect car. If you want to get the most car for your moeny go private and take your time. If you want a car NOW go main or specialist dealer. I would have no qualms going to a specialist - there are some really good ones and a few that are known for only selling great cars.

3) The only important extras are those that you want! No two buyers have the same requirements so just look for those that you want. Extras shouldn't push up the price though, only improve the desirability.

4) Price leeway. Given that there are loads of 996s out there you should be able to negotiate a little. You will probably find there is less negotating that with some more "normal" cars however as the market does have a kind of fixed value on 911s (as you have noticed). Most buyers are willing to travel to find the right car so geographic variations don't exist that much.

5) This website has some really good dealers advertising through it and is a great start. I will send you a private message with some other options (don't want to offend the sponsors!)

Cheers

James
