All,

Any help or advice welcomed. Currently I am saving like mad to try and obtain a LHD 3,6 Turbo 964. Not for a while yet as I am about a year away from purchase, but always trying to look ahead to my dream, any indication of what to look for, Insurance costs, running costs, pitfalls and especially purchase prices etc etc would be appreciated.... Any friendly dealers willing to part with pearls of wisdom also welcome! Is it worth asking a dealer to source for me or will they charge the earth??

Cheers in advance!

Mike, welcome!

I've contacted a couple of 3.6 Turbo owners, so fingers crossed help should arrive soon :)

Phil.

Hi Mike,

The `93/94 model 911 (965) turbo 3.6 is a fantastic car!!, the last of the `muscle shape` Porsches. I am no expert on the model but currently own a RHD one in Midnight Blue metallic. I have owned this car now over two years and try and give you a few pointers. I've seen prices for the LHD 3.6 turbos on average range from 23K - 33K. RHD's I've seen between 33K - 46K. Obviously mileage/condition/history being an important factor. Personally I'd sooner pay a bit more for a good `genuine` example that's been well looked after preferably by an enthusiast. These cars will resell better and have lower running costs in the long run. If you could stretch to a RHD then you also have the rarity as only a total of 74 of these cars were imported into the UK in RHD. Probably only half that number around now.

If your budgeting for LHD then I guess tracing the history is going to be one of the main points for you. If you buy from a dealer that specialises in imports of LHD Porsche's then they should have done this as obviously they don't want to end up with a lemon. Still be careful and do as much checking as you can. I see Formulae Fuchs
www.fuchs.co.uk
have a LHD drive 3.6 turbo for £29,995 (59,300 miles) as advertised on this site. If its not too far for you to travel I would go and pay a visit. Try and test drive as many 3.6 turbos as you can, you will get the feel for what is a really good one. When you do find a good example have a Porsche inspection carried out before purchase. The owner should have no objections to this if they are confident in the car. Plus the inspection could come up with any future expenses that may need attending to. May also help in negotiations.

I don't know of any pitfalls with these models, it will be worth checking the history to see when the clutch was last changed. Clutch replacement on my car 3 years ago by OPC - £3,000. Have a good look at the 18" Speedline wheels, your looking at around £3,000 for another set. Interior, I've seen quite a few even low mileage cars where the seats have been scuffed, mainly on the side bolsters or the leather has cracked quite badly. Not cheap to correct !. An enthusiast will keep the interior and paint work top condition.

As for running costs, I've done nearly 10,000 miles in just over two years. Only running cost expense has been front tyres, Bridgestones (£405 / Jasmine Motorsport Ltd), Battery (£85.15 /OPC). Annual services (£500 - £800 each /OPC), Two Mot's £37.50 each (pass 1st time as expected ; ). That has been my only running costs up to now!, a recent Porsche inspection found no future repairs looming. When I purchased the car from OPC new rear tyres were fitted, discs + brakes. The car has been a dream to own, run and drive. I cannot stress enough though the importance of purchasing a `good` well cared for example which in my opinion results in overall lower running costs. You may be tempted to go for the cheapest you can find but be cautious as these can in the long run cost more to keep on the road than say a car that was 3k - 4k more. Do as much checking as you can, make sure the car feels right, have a full pre purchase inspection carried out. Look at as many 3.6 turbos as possible to get an idea of what to expect regarding price/condition.

Sorry to have gone on so much, I hope the above is of some help. If there is anything else you want to ask me please get in touch.

Jay.

BTW: I currently have my car for sale which I am seriously considering removing from the market, good examples are hard to find and don't know if I could replace my car in the future when I come back to this model. Anyway, check out my site at:

Should give you some general info on this model.
