I bought a set of slightly crappy 986 Boxster 17s a year ago when I wanted something just to stand the car on while I had my 18s refurbished. They've been sat in the garage ever since but I'd been thinking that I should perhaps use them for winter. This will be the first winter I don't have my old BMW running winter tyres and they were great when I my wife needed to be taken to work in the snow and ice.

The sizes recommended by Porsche are 205/50/17 and 225/40/17. Neither seem to offer as good options as the 18" sizes but I'd welcome some recommendations.

Thought I'd bump this back up ten months later. I have found that I can get Vredstein Wintrac Pro in the correct 911 17" size front and rear but that seems to be about it. I need to take another look at the wheels before I do anything and consider the offset. I recall the front looking quite tucked in compared to the standard 18s. If they're good I'll get some used Center caps and get the whole lot refurbished. Maybe body colour! :?:

I've recently bought a set of 17" 10 spokes to put winter tyres on.

I would ideally like to run all season tyres with 255/40 17 on the rear, but there are no all seasons in that size. Looking at the reviews, the n-rated Pirelli Sottozero are rated as winters, but have poorer snow braking and better wet grip that more winters, so behave more like All Seasons. Unfortunately a set is £640.

I have decided to wait and see if the spend required on my car (which I've only had 3 months) settles down before committing to the tyres, if it doesn't I'll get a cheap run around as well and get winters for that.

255/40/17 seems to be a really awkward size. It's quite frustrating
