General Buying Advice 2

Hello all :)

First post, just a feeler. I'm seriously considering buying a 911 next year (will be my first) Own a Porsche at least once in your life and all that.

I presently have a C6 RS6 stage 2, which I've owned 5 years or so. Before that I had an E46 M3 convertible for 12 years from near new.

I have no real criteria other than I like driving/owning the car. I generally keep a car a long time as long as the above, and it's reliable.

I will be willing to spend up to £70k perhaps up to £80k for something really special.

I did register interest with my local dealer for a test drive, but they haven't chased me back, not great.

I'm in no rush, but am starting to think about what to get and from where, main dealer or specialist etc. Other considerations not take a complete bath on the ownership.

I would appreciate any views on what model I should be steered towards and or any other helpful advice.

I won't be using the car much, probably 5k a year max. and I'm in no rush so just starting to try to learn.

Thanks for all/any replies :)

:welcome: to 911uk.

That's a very enviable budget for a first 911 but be aware that cars at that price point are going to be mainstream models and will therefore still be depreciating.

To get most fun for your £££s and at the same time minimalising depreciation I'd be looking for a late Gen1 991 GTS.

Posted a similar thread but would share my thoughts here too :) I decided much like you wanting a car to keep for a while and depreciation indeed can be a killer - if you look at 991.2 with decent spec from opc its ~70k-80k for late 2016 model which from new (including options) would be ~110-120k.. I cant imagine owning a car for 3 years and losing 40-50k!

Im personally someone that doesn't fettle (no skills in that area) and risk averse so OPC 2 year warranty is a comfort level even though higher initial purchase price.

Thanks for the replies.

Obviously at this stage I'm just getting feel, starting to look.

I accept depreciation, would be nice to avoid(!), just would want to avoid horrendous amount.

My RS6 is 770ps 1100Nm so one concern will be "thrill" but test drives will sort that.

Just in case you didn't realise.

If you buy a car from a dealer outside of the OPC network after 90 days ownership (ie after the minimum warranty a.n.other dealer would be obliged give you) you can put your car through the 111 point check and buy an a 12 month or 24 month OPC warranty. If buying this way you will get a bigger choice of cars and might also save yourself a few £££s.

Similarly if buying a car privately it may already have an OPC warranty on it in which case this can be transferred/extended straight away.

In either scenario getting a 111 point check (c£220) done as a Pre-Purchase Inspection would flag up what it would need to get the warranty and would give you a decent tool for price negotiation.

A GTS would be a fine choice and would be my choice, however you could also consider a Turbo which are creeping into low 80s.

Does it have to a 911? You could consider a Cayman GT4.

Coming from your RS6 you no doubt love a bit of torque and AWD traction, within the 911 world a Turbo would give you that but in a more agile, sporting way. 991 Turbo would be worth a look at the top end of your budget, they look great value for a supercar.

Thanks for replies

The RS6 is my first Audi, and first AWD.

At stage 2 it's a riot, yet secure with AWD, I still love it, bonkers car.

I have no real choice yet, just thought 911 as icon, and budget. I need to drive to know if I really like a particular car.

I'm in no rush, so can spend time learning and waiting for the right car.

Appreciate all the replies.

if you've had a fast 4wd car then stick with a 4wd 911 Carrera 4, 4S or the 911 Turbo

What part of the country are you located in, as there is always a good supply of cars from certain specialists

example of a low mileage 997 Generation 2 Turbo for £70k which is 500hp

or up to £79k for a 520hp 991 Generation Turbo S
