Just wanted to do quick introduction to the forum. Having just sold my E46 M3 a few months ago I was in the market for a nice 996 C2 Manual, preferably a sunroof delete car. I imagined that I would probably end up with an early 3.4 that needed a bit of work but as it happened a very nice early 3.6 car came up in my perfect spec locally and a deal was agreed! The specs of the car are as follows:

996 C2 Manual Sunroof-delete in Seal Grey
Extended Black Leather with carbon/aluminium interior trim
18" Carrera 5 spoke wheels
Option 762 'Market Launch' Car from September 2001
98k miles with FSH, 2 previous owners.

The car is nearly 20 years old and is in excellent cosmetic condition thanks to the care of the last owner who had the car for 13 years and always garaged it under a cover and used it weekly. Whilst it has FSH and a long list of suspension/brake/ancillary repair/replacements I think it is time for a bit of a mid-life refresh, which I hope to carry out gradually over the next year or two. The car is running strongly but the original silencers need replacing which will be carried out next week with Top Gear stainless steel items and a new fixings kit. The car will also be getting a new Pierburg water pump, a Wahler low temperature thermostat, a full coolant flush, change and new coolant cap, new drive belt and deflection/tensioner pulleys, new Type911 RS engine mounts and a set of six new Beru ignition coils.

The cars has had a suspension refresh (coffin arms, shocks, arb bushes) and alignment in the last few thousand miles, alongside replacement disks/pads/fluid and new tyres all round so I should be sorted on the chassis front for the time being.

A couple of things I would like to attend to are the gear shift and the PCM audio system. The shift is perfectly acceptable and is as I remember the standard manual box in these cars. However I have been rather spoiled in that the M3 had a fully refurbished SMG2 box in it which (whilst much maligned by the general public) is a fantastic system and is excellent for fast road driving (very fast full-power shifts). I am contemplating getting one of Alex's short shift kits once I ascertain what sort of improvement changing the engine mounts provides. Also I have a PCM with Bose (pre-MOST) and the CD changer is not working. What are my options for getting an AUX input instead of the changer? I can see a pair of phono inputs for the audio out of the changer but I can't fool the PCM into thinking there is a CD playing – any tips? I'd rather not pull out the head unit if it can be done in the boot.

I have a very similar spec'ed car, C2, manual, sunroof delete etc but I really, really wanted seal grey for the colour and ended up with artic silver, so really envious.

May I ask if the purchase was a private one? and if so, how have you reassured yourself that the car is a good'un before planning to spend so much money on it... like new TG exhaust? It certainly looks good, but I guess I am talking M96 engine here. Maybe you know your 'engines' (like I don't really!)

I totally agree that sometimes one buys (or doesn't buy) the 'vendor' in a transaction like this (and yours look gold plated) ie you form a view about who you are doing business with, in addition to PPIs and the like. I bought mine 4 months ago possibly with a bit too much heart rather than head, but I certainly 'bought' the vendor and the maintaining garage, that I visited before buying.

Like you I can see a program of semi-optional 'spend' ahead ..exhaust, suspension etc ..but currently I am just getting to know the car by driving/enjoying it and generally proving to myself that I made a really good purchase (which seems to be the case).

So that a long way of asking ...did you do what everyone on this forum advises as regards PPIs etc or did you trust your knowledge and instincts like quite a lot of us?

What's the 'market launch' option? Not come across it before. My last 4S had the 'press car' option, but I never saw it in a publication.

FRP – Yes I think I will do the SSK mod sometime next year. Do you know how much Alex charges for his modded shifter? What are the alternatives – 997, 997SSK?

T8 – Thanks, I think Seal Grey and the Carrera 5 spokes suit the 996.2 down to the ground. Evidently Porsche did too as they specced this car.

Hughb- Congrats on your purchase too, Arctic silver is a classic 911 colour...never goes out of fashion. Yes the purchase was a private sale. As you mention you buy the seller as much as the car and this car has excellent provenance – the PO bought Porsche Approved in 2006 and has every receipt (£16k+) since. It has been serviced every year regardless of mileage. I have read what feels like the entire internet regarding these cars and their manifold issues so I wasn't going in blind. I've also owned several 20 year old performance cars before so I understand the level of maintenance required to keep things running nicely. I did consider having a PPI with boroscope done at my local specialist to assess the state of the bores - however I made my assessment of this and as the car displays no outward symptoms of scored bores I decided to put the few hundred pounds this would have cost towards the mechanical works I am carrying out now. The car is on its original IMS bearing at 98k so I will investigate changing this when the (original!) clutch wears out.

Jez - thanks for that, looking forward to getting them fitted. I stripped down the rear of the car today in preparation...

Another Seal Grey C2 owner here....when I was looking every car I checked out was Silver so I thought the Seal Grey was pretty rare but since I bought mine every other 996 I see is Seal Grey 😄
 
OK, so the strip down commences. My garage are ready to take the car on Monday so I need to squeeze in a few hours work to get it ready for them. I have removed the rear bumper and both side heatshields in order to provide easy access to both ends of the exhaust bracket bolts. This proved prescient as I was able to clean out a little muck and stones and give the whole rear end a good clean, and it has revealed a little rust starting on the hidden lip behind the heatshield upper mountings. I will look to remedy this over the weekend – does anyone have a good solution for repainting this surface which is never seen but is in constant contact with the heatshield bracket? I would ordinarily just sand down to 800 grade, mask all visible areas, zinc primer, paint and lacquer but is there a better/more robust solution where the bracket meets the panel? Additionally there is a funny sort of clear plastic film applied to the upper part of this panel crease (presumably to stop the bumper chafing on the panel) – does anyone know where to source this or an alternative?

For rust like that I take it back to bare metal as clean as possible then use Bilt hamber deox C gel followed by Hydrate 80. Hydrate 80 forms a base that acts like a primer but I'll usually prime anyway before over painting.

I tend to use Bilt Hamber or Dinitrol products for dealing with rust. I also like BH electrox primer over other zinc primers.
 
Thanks UncleP. I have never used the BH products before but I will check them out. I have taken it back to bare metal on the lip and treated it with Phosphoric acid, 2 coats zinc primer, 2 coats paint and I'll put a layer of clear coat on it later today. I have decided against putting waxoyl over the outer face of this lip. My thinking is that it gets a lot of road spray off the rear wheels which sits between this lip, the heat shield and the bumper rear surface, so it is better to try and promote it drying out as quickly as possible. The rest of the rear bodywork is remarkably rust free fortunately, apart from a little bit on the bottom of the engine carrier which I'll attend to whilst the water pump and engine mounts are being fitted.

I wish I could say the same about the exhaust fixings!! I am going to remove the silencers, hopefully by removing the longer unequal length bolts first and leaving the flat brackets attached to the cradle in place. I have a new fixing kit so I will replace all bolts and clamps with new.

All parts are with me now except the water pump so hopefully I can get this lot done in the next week or two. Is it best to replace the engine mounts with the rear carrier bolted on or whilst it is unbolted during water pump removal, assuming the engine will be independently supported in either case?
