High mileage turbo - what to worry about?

Hi, I am currently driving a 997C4S gen 1 with 110k miles. It has a years Porsche warrantee on it as runs really well. Delightful.

I am toying with upgrading to a turbo or maybe a GTS - I would prefer a manual.

I have seen a gem 1 turbo with 80k ok the clock. Slightly tempted to go and see.

Couple of questions:

What should I worry about in a turbo of this age and mileage - I'm thinking the big bills?

What do you recon I should get for the C4S? PSE ( brand new), gearbox just replaces as well as a bunch of other stuff on the warrantee?

Best advice is to have an independent Pre Purchase Inspection and then decide. The Mezger engine us reliable but high miles has wear and tear that may have had bits renewed - rads, condensors, discs, pads, clutch, suspension, coffin arms etc.

PPI is a must-have in my opinion, especially on a Turbo.
 
I have a fairly good idea on this as I am doing a lot of work on my own turbo. It has low 80k miles. It had OPC history up to 50k ish then good independants up to 60k.
I would say the engines are amazingly engineered and are bullet proof providing they have been serviced at decent intervals. With that said the late history of mine was chequered (neglected by the last owner or two) but the core engine was all in great order. I would second the PPI route; I didn't get one but then I knew I would be working on the car so I took a punt as it was well priced.
I would say regarding the big issues , and this is more age related particularly if the car has ever lived near the coast or been driven in UK wet or worse conditions.

Turbos - condition of
Coolant pipes *pipe stubs on various engine parts*(more common as an issue in the USA but I did all mine).
Transfer box and Diff condition (and leaks)
Coils and plugs (when last changed)
brakes and brake pipe condition
Coolant pipes under the car, at the front and engine bay (the big main ones)

They were the main things that I have noticed on a few cars I have seen and of course my own. Additional things are other corroded items under and around the engine, that could mean work required .

Turbos are more commonly corroding between the housings due to their location. This can be a costly job to replace them (more so if the turbo lines won't come out). Can be done engine in if they can undo the lines at the turbos but its still £5-6k for turbos and labour and any other parts.

With that said I was told by two reputable indies that it is not just mileage but age, they have seen it on 40k mile cars. So a PPI would pick that up along with the other bits.

If you can get a car with reasonable turbos or even replaced ones, that would be for me a good sign on the rest of the car!
Porsche wont replace the turbos under warranty unless they are actually holed and blowing smoke, so a car that has had full OPC service history doesnt necessarily mean everything is hunky dory. To do the turbos would be a lot more than the price above at an OPC. I think they quoted me £3300 each plus vat for the turbos. Labour would be , a lot.

Well worth buying one though, I wouldnt say mileage would be the key factor, more condition which a good PPI will identify.
 
Just to help, my car is 13 years old, has 72,000 miles on the clock and up till now has always had full OPC servicing. However, this time I sent it to my local independent specialist who have worked on Porsches for many years with an excellent record. They fully checked the car showed me what needed doing and then carried out the following work . The main issue was corrosion.
Major service including plugs and coils. Gearbox oil and filter change(Tip gearbox). Change diff oil. New front disc pads with new sensors. Change brake fluid in complete system. Two new front shock absorbers with bearings, top mounts and bump stops. Four new front CV boots. Two new rear lower arms. Full geometry check. Replace exhaust straps and fixings to exhaust and heat shields. Fit new cat to manifold fixings. Remove OS turbo( leaking) overhaul and refit with new gaskets and exhaust temp probe (the other turbo still fine).
The total cost of this work was £7215.94.
My recommendation. Get a good specialist to look over the car and go through results with you, carefully check service history but still be prepared to have to spend some money. These cars can take very high mileage but they need proper servicing.

Good first post there Tillly! That is interesting as it was my OS turbo that had the leak too (NS was fine) .

Whilst the Mezgers are basically reliable the bits attached to them can be costly- a friend was recently faced with a £10k bill for work on his 997.1TT, inc two turbos. Inspection essential!
