Stuck brake bleed nipples

Over the winter I'm going to remove the calipers to replace hard lines and hoses to the brakes. Ahead of that I've been cleaning and soaking the bleed nipples as I know they're not in great shape.

On the weekend I checked, and I have 6 out of 8 that are stuck.

So, any recommendations on where to send the calipers to get the bleeders removed? I really want to avoid anywhere that's going to need me to fit inserts.

RPM look after the car so I could try them, but wonder if there are better brake specialists to use.
 
Being stuck is tricky to determine, the only way you'll really know is if they break before they come out!

You must use a socket and 'T' bar so that you don't apply any bending force as you try to turn them. I did contemplate trying my 18V impact driver but luckily mine gave in to the socket set in the end (after soaking overnight with Plus Gas).

Afterwards fit stainless nipples.
 
I sent mine to pro calipers, this was after I had one break and I tried everything to get it out, including an easy out that broke in it, a caliper specialist will have more luck with them as they will have the correct technique and as said use stainless afterwards.
 
tap them with a hammer

heat them with whatever you have

use the T handle on a good fitting socket to properly apply rotational force

I did this on mine and they all came out, apart from the one the PO snapped.

I removed that caliper and took it to a local engineers, they mounted it in the mill and accurately drilled it out and cleaned up the thread and cut a new nipple seat.

Didn't cost much.
 
Threads are M10x1.0. I've had no luck with t handle hex, brake line spanner, tapping with various tools, blocking the bleed hole with a drill bit to reduce the chances of shearing, and I even tried heat on one.

I have stainless replacements ready to go back in.

Pro calipers we're on my list of possibles, so I'll give them a call.

i have just compleated swaping mine. i found a video on utube using a glowplug removal windy gun at a low setting. approx 20Nm my version was a 18v dewalt impact driver with 3 settings and a impact socket modded to bear on the nipple hex not drop down to the caliper. this and a 15 sec squart of artic freeze spray no probs.

with just the tbar felt as if they would shear off and i did try with just the spay and it did move but the impact really is the ticket.
 
Interesting info thanks. I don't know much about impact wrenches, but I'd assumed they'd just strip the top right off.

When you say you had to mod the hex socket, in what way?
 
a small length of 10mm? steel tube in the 11mm socket so the hammer action is on the hex
 
one good hard tap with a hammer on the end if the nipple normally does it for me.
 
By way of an update. I tried a few more of the suggestions on here, including a firm thump, impact driver, etc.

Managed to remove 4 of 8, snapped one, and of course I've ended up with one stuck in each caliper :roll:

So, calipers are off and now en route to Pro Calipers for a refurb and to remove the remaining bleeders.

I've decided to replace the short hard lines and the hoses at the same time and fortunately they all came apart without much trouble. I have new hoses from FVD, the only mystery is which are front and which are rear, and which way round?......

Overhauled calipers back on the car, along with the new brake hoses and short pipes.

Put 1.2L of fluid through the system with my Motive, bubble free now.

But, no brake pedal. :frustrated:

I was careful to ensure the system didn't drain out while the calipers were off, but have I managed to let the master cylinder empty out?
 
I've just completed a further bleed using the Motive and the brake pedal method combined. I was surprised how much more air came out, but problem seems solved at least.

My understanding is that the lines with the extra protective sleeves are the rears and the ends with the protective sleeve are connected to the caliper as extra protection against stones etc
 
That's what I've ended up doing thanks to a bit of help from Rennlist.

Just finished bleeding this morning, so needs a run next, and then probably another check for bubbles.
