I'm currently looking at a 3.4 981 and as this would be my first Porsche I'm after some advice in regard to typical problems with the 3.4 to look out for, and possibly should I be insisting on an independent Porsche specialist to carry out any inspection?

I don't think there are any reported issues on the 3.4 981. Just make sure everything works as it should and what history its got. Probably not much given its 2yr servicing.

Buy on condition. If PDK there's a 'rumour' the gearbox is only good for 120k miles and is replacement not repair - sceptical of these claims.

Are you going with an Indy to service it going forward? If so consider them for a PPI. Any OPC warranty? If so and private sale its transferable. Non-OPC dealer voids it (unless they're using the SOR route  )

:yeah: and :welcome: to 911uk.

A 981S is a nice entry into Porsche ownership.

Thanks for the reply's

Two I've seen in particular are Non-OPC unfortunately. They only ones in the network I may be interested in are 40 - 50k mileage, two I've seen are sub 20k. it's a shame as I'd sooner buy OPC for the two year warranty.

The Sale of Goods Act covers you for any car bought from a dealer regardless of any 'warranty' they also offer.

As long as the car is standard you can get an OPC warranty after 90 days of ownership.

It might be worth getting a 111 point inspection done at an OPC before purchase. That'll be a decent PPI AND give you an indication of what would be needed to get that OPC warranty. That might help in negotiating the right purchase price.

Good Luck :thumb:

Good place to start. Enquire if they are being sold directly by the garage, or by SOR. If SOR you can get a warranty as soon as you own it.

Thanks, any idea on the rough cost of an OPC inspection and warranty cost?

The 111 point inspection costs £216 incl VAT although you can get a discount if you're in the PCGB.

Warranty can't be discounted and for a 911 is approx' £1100 for 12 months, £1900 for 24. It maybe a bit less for a 981.

You need to own for 90 days to get the extended warranty.

As above, 111 point check and Porsche warranty. They are lovely cars.

There are no set problems on these cars that i'm aware of .. either by seeing or have heard of .

Considering imho it's the best Porsche out there and i take an interest in this model then i think i would have heard something .

You can get the occasional one off fault as with any car but over all .. it's a good one to buy .

To be pedantic .. never leave the roof in the service position for too long .. you won't as its only something we do but i was told it can distort the roof frame .

Always .. if possible get a Porsche warranty .. whilst i know of no problems its piece of mind .

Thank you all for the very informative responses, OPC inspection and warranty is something I will definitely do.

Has anyone bought from Porsche Approved Used? Typically what are they like in regards to movement on price, it's listed as a SOR.

Depends what they've got in it. They will move on price but not by much. More scope if SOR as the owner usually wants to get shut. When I looked at a GT4 up at SOR after no interest they dropped the price £5k  presunably on the owners instructions to get his dough out.

From memory I think Boxster/Cayman warranty is c£650pa - and that includes GT4

Thanks again, I'd like to think if it's a SOR there's movement, also doesn't state 111 point check, but the price is main dealer money, I guess depends on how long it's been up for sale.
