PPI where the car is serviced?

Hey Everyone.

I am buying a 996 privately and looking to get a PPI completed and need impartial advice.

The car is serviced by a reputable specialist who has had praise by many. Is it fair to have them do the PPI on the vehicle or a conflict of interests? May seem silly, and I have been known to make silly comments in the past, but as it's my first 911 I don't want to make a mistake first time. Also geographically it's a challenge to take it other places.

Many thanks.

From a buyers point of view then i would agree with HSC911 .

What i can say .. as i do this for a living ..

I'm not really interested in who owns a car .. a PPI is a list of what's wrong with the car .. should we miss or omit something then it falls back on us.

The person paying the bill is the one that gets the report .. the owner doesn't .. its upto the bill payer to share it should they wish to .

I inspect the car as i inspect any car and give a full list of the faults found .

I will say that a ppi is a very hard inspection .. well the way i do it is and you will get a rather large list ..

Its at this point we sit down and go through the list as to what needs doing and what doesn't ..

Think of it as i check the car against what a new car would be like ..

A broken slat on an air vent or a defective cig lighter is not exactly a problem but i'm going to report it ... a leaking shock is a problem and again i will be reporting it .

If you have a choice in garages for the PPI then use another .. if not then hopefully the garage is no different to mine and in my innocent little world we all are the same .

If you state your location we may be able to advise on an alternative inspection source? :dont know:

Many years ago I viewed a 996 C4s that the owner had spent many thousands on service and repair with Mike at Sports and classics.
I asked him to do a PPI and bore score check and he confirmed that it had severe scoring on the number 6 cylinder!
Weeks later it let go in spectacular fashion by all accounts and ended up at Hartech for a " just leave your credit card with me" rebuild!

I would like to think like that, however you said yourself 'from a buyers point of view.." I've not heard anything negative. I'm just very keen to make sure no mistakes are made. :)

Thank you for your comment!

Appreciate, don't want to come across negative about someone who doesn't deserve it so I would rather remain silent about location. Just asking for opinions and not wanting to feel like I'm being overly cautious?

So you were happy he saw the car then, even though he serviced it over time? What made you feel confident to go to him even though he serviced it before?

I wouldn't view you as being negative, nothing wrong with getting a second opinion at all.

Personally, if I was thinking of buying a car that was serviced by my Indy, then he'd be the first guy I'd speak to about it. That's more down to the relationship I have with him and trusting his skills and honesty (so far I've no reason not to).

Any older Porsche is going to cost you money, go into it with very open eyes. Hope you get a good one.

I'd like to think that any specialist would do a PPI as if they'd never seen the car before and provide a comprehensive list of their observations along with an opinion of the remaining serviceability of consumables.

Similarly if the seller is happy for his preferred specialist to conduct the PPI it should just be the case that he is confident that his car is issue free and in good condition.

Personally, I'd be more comfortable with having my PPI done at a completely independent specialist. I've been in your situation before and did just that.

Because his reputation then and now was unquestioned and I was employing him on that day.

Tell us who the Indy is, you will soon get feedback. If he's reputable use him, one, he will won't you as a customer, two, has he as been looking after the car, reputation wise he's got a lot to lose, if he misses something.

However bear in mind it's an old car and some owners only won't the minimum maintenance undertaken. Some are happy with a mark here or scratch there, while others are not.
