Spotted this for sale in a local auction to me (just happens to be where I got my 997 from), what is it, it’s not like any 356 I’ve ever seen?

718, currently sharing the same model number with the Boxster and Cayman, it was also known as the RS60 and 61 ( googled the last bit), there are a few replica's knocking about that I have seen at shows.

WHAT... UGLY...!!!! You guys risk being excommunicated by the faithful... (-: From a very dull memory the original of that was amongst the leaders of technological advance that led to race car development as it is today, hard to imagine someone turning up at a F1 race with a front engined car... (-:

OK, OK so it is a kit car, but even assuming it has a VW chassis and engine it is still likely to be a lot of FUN and perhaps just too RAW for those well used to being cosseted in modernity. What no computers to keep me safe from the hundreds of horse power I have little or no talent to make real use of, no auto box.... Jeez, whatever next..

Yeah my Luddite tendencies can be hard to hide at times... Floor

Is it a replica, just checked the number plate on dvla website, and it's coming up as 1970 Porsche?
Or has somebody managed to get the details on the logbook changed Dont know

I assumed it was a genuine car with it being at auction and no mention of it being a replica

It's listed as a 1962 356 Spyder which doesn't exist as a car, especially in that shape.

It's a kit car, possibly with a 1962 356 engine but the J plate makes it a lot newer than a 1962 build.

I reckon it's got a 356 engine and maybe a Porsche chassis so when the replica body was added in 1970 it could be registered as a 1970 Porsche.

I agree dvla list it as 1970, so I presume its a later car made look like a 718 Dont know

That someone by means fair or foul has managed to register it as a Porsche may add something to it`s value..

I have doubts that it would have a 356 engine more likely a 912 given the difference in market of values of rotted out 912`s against a rotten 356.

Seems even 912`s are valued much more than they were at one time... but some of them can be really rotten, as none of them were galvanised, not that old galv Porsches do not rot..hmm... Question

Hmm..? Looking at it again, those wheels would be unlikely to be found on any VW..? Assuming I am looking at the correct images..

I have seen a few replicas that were close to impossible to tell from the original, thinking Jag XKSS and "D" Types. Eagle "E" are not ORIGINAL Jags either... INCOMMING... Floor

Interesting that it is actually registered as a Porsche as they are usually VW or Alfa flat 4s Grin

It`s sitting way too high though nooo

I`m going to keep my eye on this one and get some more info on engine etc, if I do get one it has to have a Porsche flat 4 in it.

It`s deffinately a replica, this auction house isn`t the right place to be selling a real 718 Spyder @ 5 million dollars plus Hand

I have doubts that any 718`s were RHD. I do not know what an Alfa flat four looks like but the engine in the pics is definitely a Porsche derivative, be it a VW or 356 or 912.. Though if my memory serves, all VW`s had cast iron barrels.. When rebuilding my 912 many years back I discovered a cracked barrel amongst other things.. Floor On visiting the local VW Beetle specialist I showed him the cracked barrel and asked if he recognised it as a VW part...which he did not...unfortunate given the cost differences..

Ultimately the local Porsche dealer at the time sourced barrels from California as all the 912 parts had been shipped there from Germany.

My guess is that if you look underneath and see cast iron fins on the barrels then it is a VW engine, if Alloy, then it is Porsche... but which one...(-:

While the Beetle lends it`s self to being the back bone of many a kit car, it does so because the whole body can be unbolted from the floor pan leaving all the running gear in situe, so a simple matter to bolt a Beach buggy or whatever on to it and drive off.. I have no knowledge if the 356 had a similar style of construction in order to be able to retain a Porsche identity and bolt a fibreglass kit to that...????

But those wheels look very much like the real thing..Hmm, interesting. Question

If anyone wants me to view this car for them I can, it’s not far away from me. I might go for a nosy anyway, as it’s starting to intrigue me as to what it is.

I would still go for it being a beetle of 1962 vintage plus a body kit. The bodywork appears in very good condition compared to the chassis which looks as if it has seen duty as a dune buggy. Intriguing though, given the way it is described.

The more I look at the photos of this 718, the engine looks like a 356/912 lump to me Grin

Further enquiries required I think, it doesn`t appear that the auction house actually have the car on site yet though Sad
