Greetings. My first post here following the purchase of my 996 last month!

Spec: 2000 Carrera 2, manual, Zenith blue with black leather

So far the only 'work" I have done is change the engine mounts, top up the oil and unfortunately I have had to top up the coolant a few times due to a minor leak - the latter should be rectified by the dealer that sold it to me, as it came with a 3 month mechanical warranty.

My other cars are a Renaultsport Clio 172 which I use for trackdays/ groceries, and a 1986 MR2 Mk1 which I use when I feel like having a fun journey and solving an 'engine won't start puzzle". The Mr2 feels amazing as it has had every single bush, ball joint, shock absorber and mount changed in the last 2 years- and I plan on giving the 996 the same treatment :)

Welcome along Harry! :bye:

Car looks great. Cool MR2 too. I always wanted a Mica Blue one when I was young but ended up getting a Mk2 Turbo when the time came. Chalk and cheese obviously but both are great.

I hope your leak is an easy fix. I look forward to watching your progress with the car. :thumb:

:welcome:

More blue 996s - I think I must have started a trend

Mine is a Violet Blue PTS - but does look very similar to Zenith Blue in different light.

Welcome Harry car looks great , look forward to the updates, hope the leak is sorted soon for you , great cars

Welcome - zenith blue looks lovely in the sun.

Look forward to updates

Hello Harry
You're obviously into your cars, the info on here is limitless.
Your 996 looks fab, enjoy!

Thanks all for the warm welcome!

I have ordered a replacement rad cap, as this may be the culprit and is easy and cheap to change! If that doesn't work, the dealer from which I bought it has agreed to have it seen to by his mechanic.

Upcoming changes:

Powerflex gearbox mount insert. The engine mounts were quite tired when I removed them so I am guessing the gearbox mount will be too.

I am deciding on my 'spec' for the suspension refresh. I like the stock ride height so will probs stay on original springs and update the dampers with Koni special actives. Going stiffer/lower with m030 etc is also an option, but it is hard to know what to go for based on internet reading alone!

If the rad cap leaks you will see a white crusty deposit on the threads and the outside .. assuming you have enough antifreeze in it .

If the lvl drops below the plastic seam seal on the bottle but doesn't drop much beyond that then the bottle has split along the seams .

For anything else it's a pressure test .. pressure gauges can be had off of ebay for less than £30 so a cheap tool to test .

Just for info .. run the car from cold , the metal tab on the pressure valve should raise up so it can be freely moved without touching the body .. if it doesn't do that then there is a leak as pressure is not being generated .

welcome btw :thumb:

Thanks deMort. Cap should arrive soon so will test this weekend!

Have purchased some Carrera Sport Classic wheels.

They are original porsche wheels with the 993 xxxx manufacturer codes, widths 7.5J, 10J. In need of refurb and new tyres would be a treat. Useable condition and for £200 I can't complain!

Currently they are on N rated PS2s: 225/40/18 at the front, 295/30/18 at the rear. I'll change the rear size to 285/30 (or maybe 265/35??).

Just ordered some renewal parts:

  • Koni Special Active shocks
Various Meyle suspension arms/ TRE / top mounts (22 separate things!!)
Motul Gear 300 75W-90 Racing gearbox fluid
    Powerflex PFR57-530 Gearbox bush insert

Keeping the original springs & ride height.

The number of suspension components (& cost) skyrocketed as I adopted a "whilst I am there" approach. The results should speak for themselves!

I will fit these over the next month or so and get a geo done. If I am sticking to a standard ride height, will a bog standard hunter alignment place work for the geo, or is it still worth the trip to a specialist such as center gravity?

It's very easy to blow the budget on parts, you can just imagine what the price would have been at an opc.
If your planning a standard geo setting I can't really see the point in paying for specialist work. It's different if your aiming for something specific like a lot of guys do on here.

I'm in the middle of my own suspension stuff atm and I'm making my own polybushes. 2 reasons for this. 1. I can make the moulds easily so the cost is kept low and 2. I can choose the grades of hardness to suit my own needs.

I'll be looking for certain geo settings which will ultimately be on the advice given here as I'm in Northern Ireland and a trip to center of gravity isn't gona happen. I'll have to choose one of the few better outfits here and see if they can get the desired settings.

Are you fitting all the parts yourself?
