Here is my '99 Carrera 4 / 3.6 X51, Arctic Silver with Metropol Blau interior. I got the car in august 2017, and have been enjoying it as a summer/weekend car ever since.

The engine was replaced with a 3.6L X51 about 31.000 miles ago. The gearbox was overhauled in 2015, and the car itself is generally in a good condition. Lowering springs from Gemballa have also been fitted, these provide the perfect blend between ride height and handling. I've also replaced the stock mufflers with a pair of FVD "Brombacher" TàœV-approved ones, which proved to be spot on - especially since I'm planning to get 200CPI cats later.

Cosmetically, there are a few marks here and there, but nothing extraordinary if you consider the age and mileage of the car, and the fact that it has been a DD earlier in its life. It drives and handles great, and the sound from the flat-six makes me smile every time (especially with those FVD cans).

Future plans:
-Respray the "frunk"
-Aero kit (yes, I like it!)
-200CPI cats (not X-pipes, straight version from TopGear)
-997 shifter mechanism
-Phone delete

Cheers!

Looks lovely :thumb:

Very cool having a X51 engine in the (imo) much prettier first gen car. (clearly I'm biased too!)

The gen 1 is prettier. I have no bias on this. I have a 1998 gen 1 with orange lights, a 2001 with clear lights, and a gen 2 2004 turbo. The early gen 1 looks superb.
I prefer the earlier 3.4 x51 engine. I am biased on that....

Thank you, gentlemen
Yes, it's a bit of a rarity. Funny how the 996.1 has grown on me too. When I first got the car, I was thinking that I should have opted for a gen. 2, but now I'm very glad I got the gen. 1. Cheers!

The 3.4 x51 is probably more useful while daily driving. I've never driven one, but if I remember correctly, it has the extra torque lower down in the rev-range. The 3.6 X51 is all about higher revs - but it does put a grin on my face when it opens up

I am interested in how they fitted the later engine to the earlier cars. Do you know what was done with the wiring and ECU? Was that all swapped as well?

MC

I agree with MC, the Gen I is a fine looking motor, especially yours - nice and low.

I'm guessing they must have done some work with the ECU, Boschtronic, whatever, stuff to make it work?

May I suggest you do an Amberectomy (removing the orange filer from your light unit). Will give the front end a much more monochrome and modern look, especially in that Silver.

How does one do this, Alex? Is there a 'home-brew' method?

Very nice VV!
I'm also interested in what else they had to do to get it working. Import the later Motronic I'm guessing?

Perfect combo though, the purer Mk1 shape with the much better sounding 3.6 engine. One of the main reasons I wasn't totally happy with my 3.4 was due to the fact I knew I'd never get it sounding as good as I'd really like.

I look forward to more updates. :thumb:

Thank you again, gentlemen. An "amberectomy" is a splendid idea, as it will no doubt make the car look even cleaner. I'll definitely look into it! Is there a DIY writeup I can read in order to not f*** up my Litronics at the first attempt? Edit: just saw the URLs posted above :)

Regarding the 3.6 transplant: everything from the harness to the ECU/DME-unit is fitted in order to make the VarioCam function as intended. It's been years since I've heard a 3.4 "in the flesh", but I reckon it's a bit quieter than the 3.6 even in stock trim. As mentioned, I also fitted the FVD Brombacher exhaust (https://www.fvd.net/de-en/BES99605001S/sport-mufflers-996-brombacher-tuv-version.html), which turned out to be the right choice for me. No droning, not obnoxiously loud, no "ricer rasp", just pure flat-six sound. I imagine it'll be even sweeter with a set of 200CPI cats from TopGear. Cheers!
