Garage billing

Hi,
First time posting here but I hope you can help please. I have what I believe to be an exorbitant garage bill and would like some opinions please.
I have a lovely three-gauge 1965 Porsche 912. I had an engine rebuild a few years back and have done v little mileage since. In a bid to get on with restoration after some poor running I took her to a new mechanic - I was forced to find a new mechanic due to illness of previous. I understood and confirmed with previous mechanic that it was time for new carbs. Sourced new carbs, with correct jets and float settings exactly for 912 from Delorto. I requested only that the new carbs be installed and setup. I have now been presented with a bill for £2.5k for, what to my mind, seems like simple, straightforward work. The mechanic claims it has taken 30 hours.
Does this not seem grossly excessive? I've never faced this before and feel I've made a massive error in going to this guy. Any advice appreciated. Cheers.

Your best bet would be to pop over to ddk online and stick a post up they are the experts on the early cars, does seem excessive I would have thought no more than a day's work for someone who knows what they are doing

Can't you ask your previous mechanic what he considers reasonable.

Thanks for reply. I am hoping to ask him, but he has been off with prostate cancer so not sure I'll get him...nor wish to trouble him. Hence the start of this problem. Just wanted a general viewpoint before I start to seek prices from other mechanics. Thanks.

Many thanks. Will look at DDK forum. Have chatted to a few specialists...consensus seems to be that, with no compounding issues- which there aren't and aren't even listed within the bill narrative - it should be standard 10 hours or so.
I really think this chap is taking the p**s.

Hi,

I'm not sure naming is appropriate - especially whilst it hasn't been resolved. I'll give benefit of the doubt. Interested to hear if others have had this problem with completely unexpected bills though and how they resolved???

I have to confess I'm a bit embarrassed to be in this predicament. I'm 43 and a company Director. I don't normally get messed about and I can generally smell when to avoid a deal - always avoid going cheap and doing my diligence first. Messed up here though. Had the car ten years now and this is the first time i've come across a seemingly bad 'en. Doh!

JPL, I see where you are coming from, and it does seem to be a bit of a predicament to say the least... My first Porsche was a 912 which was a bit of an old dog, given the corrosion it suffered from, though it opened my eyes to what Porsche was all about... (-:

From my forum I.D. you might guess I am a grumpy old man when it comes to the wonders of modern gizmology and am an avid reader of DeMort`s exploits in tracing wiring while chasing down ever elusive intermittent faults, or indeed the high level of alternative possibilities relative to any one permanent fault....!

Sorry I got off track... while carbs by comparison are "relativly" simple devices they may be thought of as entirely stone age by the average mechanic brought up and educated in today`s digital technology, thinking relative to asking a bricklayer to knap out a usable blade from a chunk of flint... ?

I guess it is possible that such a mechanic could spend a fair bit of time on his PC and asking around in a bid to obtain the alternative jets should your now aged car require other than the standard set-up, and info on the required sequence to ensure balance across the carbs, whereas someone well used to a similar set up could carry out the task in a fraction of the time... I note DeMort has not jumped in as yet, it would be interesting to read his thinking..hmm.

Hope you can resolve the without too much fuss, but I guess before I might hand a task over to any tradesman I might expect to have at least asked for an informed estimate on costing, with a requirement for a call for my approval to carry on if that estimate was likely to be exceeded by any degree that seemed reasonable.... Yeah all a bit late now, though some lessons come at a price.. Ouch!

Regardless, it seems logical to expect that any business can hopefully justify the costs involved relative to the process of achieving the end result if asked to..? I suspect the end result is that you are happy with your Porsches hopefully improved performance... Though new carbs can be an expensive outlay relative to actual performance improvement on a strictly cost benefit analysis process of evaluation..
