Symptoms of a failed solenoid? Tapping?

Before I swap it I was wondering what the symptoms were if the solenoid failed or was on its way out, if possible?

Trying to find the source of usual 3.4 tapping noise and possibly unrelated smoking on startup which can last a few mins especially out of near side exhaust.

Definitely from bank 4,5,6.
Had a new AOS.
All hydraulic lifters replaced.
Full service.
Bores clean, no scoring.
Spark plugs all clean, slightly darker on no 4 but only a bit.

Stethoscope used and no 4 slightly noisier then 5 & 6.
Tapping sound equal on exhaust branches to 4,5 and 6.
Variocam end defiantly louder.

Tapping is when cold and hot and disappears with only a small increase in revs.

Cars runs great so happy that this could be just the characteristic tap but with the info above would like to investigate a little further just for personal interest.

So looking at Variocam end next as well as disconnecting coils individually.

Any thoughts on next steps appreciated.

That's worn mechanical parts and not your soleniod. What grade oil you running on?

Edit: and what mileage?
