My 957 Cayenne GTS Progress thread

Another car, another thread.

With the news of my wife being pregnant, 2 months to go at the time of writing (it's a boy!), my first thought was obviously new car time! It didn't take me long to decide on a Cayenne, she doesn't like estate cars, a hatch would be too small and the boot on a saloon may be challenging,we both fancied something high up although most high up non estate cars tend to be diesels which are a no no as I feel the government wasnt to phase them out and in additon, most tend to be unreliable which ruled out the 2nd inline choice of a BMW X5 4.8. A shame as I test drove one and I couldn't fault it, with it being much much much more modern inside compared to the 957 Cayenne and generally newer looking, after driving it, I couldn't stop seeing them on the back of AA trucks, so I just kept returning to search for Cayennes. I would have loved a Macan but the budget doesn't stretch, the Cayenne is pushing it on the size factor and I'm going to have to see how the wife gets on with it while we still live in suburbia. So, I had always liked the Cayenne and being in love with the Porsche brand, it made sense to add a 4th to the collection. Realising they do a GTS version which had alcantara and nice bits on it, it had to be one of those!

I have been looking for one since October/November and just wasn't finding much, they either pop up and disappear really quick or they have remained on sale for months and months for whatever reason. They always seem to be black which I really really didn't want as black is my nightmare colour to maintain and on a car the size of a house, multiply that by 2!

To cut a long story short, I found my perfect one albeit, more miles than I wanted but I started to get a little desperate due to time, I wanted to get a car that I could get up to my standards before all my time is occupied with the baby.

The car I found was silver which is great as that is my favourite colour on a car, it had the wheels I wanted, full history and all the options I wanted and more.

I contacted the owner and a deal was done. In the time I was awaiting a good opportunity to go and get the car, I managed to locate the previous owner and spoke to him, a lovely guy who told me about his time with the car, who the 1st owner was and the various bits of work which was carried out on the car in his time. This was brilliant for me, I love to know everything I can find out about a car I own and to get this kind of contact and info was priceless. I was sent old pictures, info on jobs done and original brochure.

This all gave me confidence in the car and as it was 300 miles away, it helped, I normally don't like buying cars that take longer than an hour to get to as I have had my time wasted so many times with dishonest sellers, an exception was made here.
So here is the car based on some pics from the 2nd owner, I am now the 4th.

Collection day begun with an alarm at an obscene time on a Sunday and a train journey from South London to the North!

A ride to the tube to get to then get to Kings Cross...

Collected from the station, good look around the car and then to a pub to go through paperwork and details over a pint (I love Northerners!)

The car was generally as described, lots of paperwork, a great owner who was a copper and his wife used it mostly, it could be described as an honest used car, I love this as once I have finished with it, the results are much more noticeable. There was one thing which I wasn't aware of and it did kind of put me off the car as I hate this kind of thing.. I was warned about the rear doors too! It is just the one door so it won't be costly to repair and the price did reflect this in the end so not too bad, just an extra hassle to have sorted.

I will seal it up the best I can for now, make sure the wife is comfortable with the car and then book it in to be repaired. I will do some preventative stuff on the other side too! It looks to have begun from stone chips, this area of the door seems to catch stones, just like 911 lower rear arches! Doh!! Will 3M PPF this at some point.

After a drink and waiting too long for the payment to go across, I was homeward bound! First fill of V power from near empty, £121!

I got home after 310 miles, 5 hours 5 minutes, 10:30pm.

Full first day of ownership, I woke up early once again and cracked on! First job was to fully inspect the car in detail and clean the underside up, I like doing this as I get a close look at bushings and the underpinnings.

This annoyed me everytime I looked in the rear view, one of the clips was bent

I did have some distractions along the way, I noticed the rear light had some moisture so had a quick poke. Going to revisit that but cleaned it up a bit.

2 litres worth of mud, thats just what I caught! :floor:

That's all for now, MUCH more to come!

So, to finish up, no nasties found, just some surface rust which is kept at bay now. Could do with some new front brake pads in the coming months and I found that the exhaust valves are stuck open, I know most people have them permanently fixed open but I would like the feature to work, I disconnected the actuator arms but the flaps themselves are what is seized, I tried WD40 and a hammer but they're seized solid, so I plan to remove the exhaust tip and try and turn the flap itself from inside.

Looking better for brighter calipers and clean arches alone!

What's next, clean under trays (a bit brown) and poke under the belly of the car. Wetvac the carpets inside, I have a new pollen filter to fit, detail the engine bay and then polish the bodywork.

Only bits aside from front brake pads and front indicator lense I need are a pair of new tailgate spring things, it's a bit heavy and I think it needs a new belt tensioner, there is a whurring noise I can hear from inside and from the front of the engine, although it does seem louder in the car, its a whur sound which goes with the RPM of the engine, the belt could do with changing while I'm at that too. I haven't investigated this at all yet so it's an assumption, it definitely sounds belt/pulley bearing-ish! Hope so anyway..

Brilliant car, comfortable, has some poke, looks great and generally, really happy with it! I'll get some full on pics of everything as it has so many options!

After doing some googling and poking around, it seems like the noise I'm hearing is normal for a PDCC equipped car. Many threads about it on rennlist and seems only new owners bring the topic up, only to be told it's normal. As I mentioned, it seems louder inside the car and after being a passenger in it tonight, seems louder in the passenger side. A bit annoying without the radio on but will live with it.

Thinking about binning the PCM2 and getting one of these android units, I like how they look like the PCM3.. Do they work with the Bose system?

The king of clean. Love your work it's great stuff

I love those GTS'.

That was up in my neck of the woods. I'm in Northumberland. If I had kept my 996 I was looking at a Cayenne GTS as a daily.
Ironically I was going to travel the other way, down towards you as there was a lovely red one on at the same time as yours that got reduced again and again. It started out at about £13k and was up for £9700 when it finally went.
So much car for the money.

Anyway good work on the arches. I look forward to seeing your progress.

I can't help with your questions though.

Excellent work!

I feeling guilty for neglecting my arches now

King of clean! haha :judge: :thumb:

Mark, I know the car you mean, the red one with black wheels, looked really clean that! Is a lot of car for the money, don't regret it athough seeing my average mpg at 11 this morning was slightly concerning! :what: :floor:

Cheers James, get under them and clean them out, god knows how much all of the crap I pulled out weighs and it was only going to rust the car out had it have been left. Well worth the effort.

Did the shopping in it last night and then got chauffeur driven home in it. Tried the PS2 out but no game! :bandit: Might swap that out for a Raspberry Pi with retro pi on as I've got one of those gathering dust.

Got 2 keys with it, 1 brand new and 1 worn so today, I thought I'd replace the worn casing with a new one.

Now it doesn't unlock/lock the car! Not tried opening the car with the key but will pop out and try that and then start the car, turn it off and press a button, apparently that can reactivate the key, lets hope so, I'm at work!

That's the one Mark yes.

The mpg was definitely a factor on my mind. It would have doubled my weekly fuel bill so I think the novelty may have worn off quite quickly for me.

The face lifted GTS looks great though and they sound lovely.
I hope you managed to wake your key up anyway.

:thumb:

It does drink, I give it that but that was expected. I'm getting an average of 13 mpg in traffic, can get 15 if it's a bit free flowing. That's the last time I look at the trip computer.

Key worked as soon as I stuck it in the ignition, phew!

Been flat out so not been able to do anything on this but tomorrow I have a few hours to crack on, want to fit the new boot struts, finish the underside and protect under there, clean engine bay and then give it a quick wash. :thumb:

Great work so far and your car looks superb!

I paint cars for a living and it appears to me that your offside wing is a darker shade of silver than the adjoining panels. May just be a trick of the light and / or you are not fussed about it.

Cheers Pops!

I'm staring at it out of the window now and all appears one colour, certainly no sign of paintwork on the panel edges when I looked. I think it's the pictures/lighting and the way the arches taper in to meet the door. My 997 front wings seems to be the same, both front wings look a different colour to the surrounding panels in some pictures.

Better side on, seems pics from front 1/4 make the wings appear off.

46769635214_246900642f_z.jpg

997 doing the same thing, it looks terrible here but this definitely hasn't been painted. The front wing tapers in like the Cayenne

Excellent, that last picture shows it is fine! Must have just been a trick of the light.

MarkGolf, excellent thread

Well now as the 2nd owner of the car all I can say is that I am chuffed to bits to see the car being looked after so well. I can vouch that I seriously doubt that any cayenne anywhere will be specced like this one.. I had the original purchase invoice and when new the car had £26k worth of extras.. It was a 100k car originally and to be honest was outshopped in the same price bracket as the Turbo S.

Its the car I should never have sold. But work pressures at the time forced its sale... happily the work pressures were resolved very quickly and less than a month later we ended up with this as its replacement..

Mark is shaming me to get cracking and carry out the same TLC.

The current steed is a very rare manual which is fun.. Its not looking as pretty at the moment on its winter wheels, missing a jacking point cover and needing an arch lip re-painted...

its lovely to see mark looking after the car so well.
