1995 993 Carrera Buying Advice

After a good few years away from Porsches I'm hopefully in a position to buy a car to keep for the very long term.

I'm out of touch with prices, just know they are up hugely since I sold my 996 GT3 for sub 40k

I've seen a Speed Yellow 1994 Carrera with very low mileage with Hexagon in London.

The car looks stunning from the pics and has had some mods like Bilstein suspension and RS front and rear spoilers and Speedline style wheels.

The car seems to have been on the market since August which surprises me as for me it looks incredible and seems to tick every box except that of Varioram but you can't have everything.

I've read some extremely detailed posts on here from people who clearly know 993's inside out and I'd be very grateful for any feedback or thoughts on the car, are the mods good? Are Hexagon reliable?

Thanks in advance.

To me looks nice , some may put off by non orig wheels and RS spoiler.
79 seems steep even with the low mileage
The main thought I have is, you must have had some cahunas to drive that around Belfast in '94!

Hexagon car does look clean and the miles are very low. Price doesn't seem unreasonable if you're an extrovert, however i'd ditch the cheap Speedline copies and buy some quality rims.

VR or NVR, wouldn't bother me. I've had both and personally prefer the punchier NVR car with its shorter gearing.

WB cars do command a premium due to lower build numbers. Loved my Vesuvius 2S but again prefer my NB C2.

Get out there and look and drive as many as you can before you make up your mind. Happy hunting... :thumb:

Hello - I own a 993 and have enjoyed every minute of ownership.

My 2 pence - that Hexagon car is a lot of money for something that isn't a real RS neither factory original to whatever is was originally.

If I was in your position, id purchase a 100,000 mile 'sorted" 993 that has had its suspension, chassis legs and windscreen surrounds done for £45-50k.

If you are wanting to spend Hexagon money, I would pick up the much rarer 993 C2S at Paul Stephens.

My pal just sold his 125,000 mile C2S for 60 something in under a day.

Scarcity always wins! 8)

Northway have a 68k LHD 993s for £79995. Having bought my Targa from them I can certainly recommend them as delivering what they promise and being very non pushy.

Likely to hold it's value better than the Hexagon one imo if LHD is not a problem

Definitely don't want LHD and the Paul Stephens one is just not my colour internally at all.

I'm not buying as an investment per se as I want to use the car as intended, for me the look of the yellow one and the low miles are attractive as I can use it and still keep miles sensible over say 10 years.

What sort of cost are a better set of alloys and what would be recommended?

Thanks for the comments re suspension, chassis legs and windscreen surrounds

I'm assuming the windscreen is only an issue if rust?

What sort of cost are the chassis legs?

Sorry for all the questions!

Thanks.

Cableguy, thanks for the input. What does WB and NB stand for though?

WB - Widebody (S, 4S & Turbo)
NB - Narrow Body (C2, C4, RS)

If you want a standard 993 then there a few out there, or do you want a RS looking one?

Some prefer standard and others prefer modded etc I have a midnight blue RS looking one :D

Alloys are a personal thing and it depends what look you want.
17" Cup 2's around £1k.
18" (BBS) MY02's are also a great choice IMO, very strong & light and £1k should get you a good set.
18" BBS LM's come up second hand from time to time and usually trade for around £2.5k.
Genuine 18" Speedlines are over £6k a set but if you're prepared to wait for some second hand then £4k'ish will buy a decent set.

Chassis legs £1k+ depending on specialist and location.

Hard to comment on windscreen surrounds as mine were done a good while before I bought the car. Guesstimate would be £1k'ish.

Suspension refreshes can vary massively depending what's previously been done or what condition wishbones, bushes and shocks are in. Worst case scenario would be £5k'ish.

There's a great thread on Rennlist showing a huge variety of rims on 993's. Definately worth checking out to see what floats your boat. ;)

It's too much dough for a NB and despite the very low miles why someone would want to turn it into an RS 'Rep' and not keep it original is beyond me :?

Granted it looks 'OK' in the pics and Hexagon have a habit of photographing their cars well and a price point suggesting the 'valuer' has been sniffing glue.

It needs a good look over with a Colini Stick but :hand: attention to detail. Ie why is the HVAC unit not sitting flush back in the dash :dont know:

Will it have ALL services completed annually from new regardless of miles covered? Purists will demand this at these prices if (and its a big if) they are actually interested in a RS Rep. Illuminati won't be.

Do you intend to drive it? If you do you'll wipe off most of the value. If you want it as a musuem piece it's too much.

Buyers are always drawn to mileage as a factor of 'condition' which is complete bollocks. Look at the 'scuff marks' over the drivers door plate threshold. It looks to me owners have repeatedly got in and out of it to nip to the local shop on a Sunday for a newspaper and a pint of milk.

The stereo is an insult to the teutonic build quality of the dash. It should have a period unit end of. I can't see if the wiper widget is present and the front PU looks to have been off as the rubber is not level. That could be a good thing as it might support new AC parts as the originals are likely to be as breathless as Giant Haystacks taking on the 100m. All of this is not insurmountable but I'd like to see it at the price and a full breakdown with receipts of what has been done and when. Period wide bolster seats would have been a benefit as well.

There are plenty of cars with 100k miles that are worthy of putting on show - the 993 engine and running gear is to great extent bulletproof.

£50k will buy a very good NB, going over you're into WB territory where buyers will often pay the premium and perhaps compromise on condition/miles to enter this arena.

Don't discount one that needs work but is solid enough and at a price point to invest dough into it without going over budget. This way you know the car will be sorted.

Best of luck chum :thumb:

You should have your own TV show Mr Z. Wise words there with such a flare for comedy too. :thumb:

Thanks Zingari. That's really helpful and some great pointers.

I'll query as much as possible with them as well as looking at some higher mileage examples.

Out of interest did you see the LHD RS Homage one that's up for £99k and to my mind is very similar? Based on what you've said here is that just utterly insane pricing or am I missing something that sets it apart?

Thanks again for the detailed post.

I can't recall it - unless it was the one with the tweaked engine. No doubt the price is trying to reflect the cost the owner put into it as it was 'bespoke'.

The word 'Homage' is reminds one of buying a pair of brogues from Tommy Balls (or Wynfields) and trying to pass them off as Edward Green. Except the more experienced shoe fetish will notice the poor sticthing, whiff of India rubber glue and the two holes in the back where they string joined them together. :nooo:

There's nothing wrong with 'Reps but they tend to be owner design build specific and therefore limit resale audience. 993 owners are fussy, very fussy (yes I was one) and want to keep everything original. At this time of year most will be gaoled in a carcoon and SORN as they don't get driven in winter or wet weather by 'enthusiast' owners who know their way around the shipping forecast and meteorological charts to assess whether ot not it's safe to drive it

Now This has Stevie Wonder interior (despite hardback seats which are very very sought after) but lots of provenence it appears and if starts with a 3 (not a 4 :hand: ) it looks a good proposition.

That said depends what you want. Yellow is a good rare colour and not unlike Jackal's car but he went very hardcore http://www.jackals-forge.com/lotus/
