PostPosted: Mon Dec 31, 2018 4:55 pm    Post subject: What's the procedure for swapping bank 1 variocam solenoid? Reply with quote

I'm just about to have bank 1 variocam solenoid replaced by my mechanic. I've been told this is the procedure below (I think). Can someone confirm:

Remove bank 1 exhaust manifold.
Lock the engine at TDC.
Slacken off bank 1 chain tensioner.
Disconnect solenoid plug.
Remove solenoid cover plate and seal.
Remove rocker cover.
Remove solenoid from variocam assembly.
Fit new solenoid.
Assemble back together in reverse order.
(Check chain guide wear whilst in there).

If anyone knows a better way or something I've got wrong, please comment.

So sorry .. i somehow missed this post yesterday Embarassed

Single solinoid so just vario cam and the above is pretty much there but you need to lock down the camshafts .. tool at the rear to hold them .

Vario cam plus .. so x2 solinoids and you undo the x2 torx bolts for the seal , remove it and then the solinoids pull out.

You can only lock one cam on the 3.4 can't you?

Pm sent .. you lock the cams on each side as you work on them .. all you are doing by this is holding them in place , its not a timeing check .. check pm as i have to log now .. ill check here tomorrow after work though .. if you want my number ( i thought you had it ? ) then pm me .

Edit: I didn't realise you've to lock the cams down along the length of them, thought you just had to lock them on the end Confused

Alex .. the tool is pretty simple .. its not much more than x2 allen head bolts on a plate which bolts to the head .

If you pop out a green bung on the back of the head youll see the hole / recess in the camshaft .. you just need to find an allen bolt to fit it .. allen bolts have a round head .

Then a plate you can attatch them to.

All you are trying to do is hold the cams in place when you remove the cover .

Look at page 42 and on for doing the cam timing .. thats manual group 1 engine from 15 .

You only need to do this if you are removing the cams .. say for the slippers on the cam adjustor .. you will then need the aligning tool .

When refitting the cam cover .. make sure there is a thin film of gasket sealent .. the area at the green bung end .. it had channels .. you REALLY dont want to block them with sealent .. it will blow out the bungs and dump oil everywhere .

I put sealent on the cam cover then with a metal ruler wipe it flat .. then remove any excess .

get your guy to have a read of that manual .. as usual for Porsche its kinda all over the place but he will get the idea if hes not done this before ....
