Installing Hertz DCX 100.3 speakers in the dash

I wanted a bit more clarity and a lot more oomph from my stereo - my old ears are struggling to hear the finer points of dialogue in The Archers when I have the roof down and a good B road to charge down.

The Hertz speakers I am using were recommended in the speaker thread, I've not yet listened to them but hope that they are good.

With that said, I suspect this method will work with any comparable speaker.

The stock speakers are Nokia/Haes 4ohm, and are fairly "built to a price", to my eye at least.

The speaker is attached with three screws, two pictured here:

And a single one at the opposite side here:

Potentially a thousand plagues lurks in this speaker mesh:

Note the three attachment points:

There's an interesting cut-out here, by the single attachment point, which gave me an idea (more on which shortly):

This is the new unit:

I cut away the speaker from the retaining ring:

I then cut three further cut-outs in the retaining ring, spacing them equidistant from one another, meaning that there were then four cut-outs, which meant that the new speaker could drop in and be held firmly:

It's not going to fit into the grill with those tabs, so they need to be edited:

Then simply refit the retaining ring with its new passenger:

This screw barely bites into the metal tab which retains it, I'll use a longer screw if I can find one:

My next task is to teach myself basic CAD and create a digital version of this ring that can be run off using a 3D printer, as I have more of these to do and I don't want to have to cut up a speaker each time.

I just cut up all four speakers when i did mine (Alpine, in my case)

But good work fella!! :thumb:

There's an argument for doing that - I've got no use for the old speakers, and they'll likely all go in the bin as I suspect selling them would not be worth the return.

Cutting the retaining rings out would therefore be getting the most use from them.

However, I'd quite like to learn Fusion 360, and play with a 3D printer, so this is a decent excuse.

Nice work Dammit. And great post with all the pics. I can see what my next project is going to be...

Well, if i had a 3D printer and stuff, I might have done it a different way too! :D

Nice work Neil. 8)

You can get speaker blanks that fit into the grilles exactly the same as the old speakers did. You can then cut them and fit new speakers to those.

Part number - 996.645.049.02.01C £19 each. That's a bit rich though but typical Porsche. If you can make some cheaper then that's good. :thumb:

They're the exact speakers I'm going for in the new year. I'm hoping they'll be enough of an upgrade but if not I'll add a powered amp in the front or rear footwell.
I'd rather not as its extra weight and I'm usually too busy driving to listen to music. Road trip with the wife necessitates better sounds though.

Looking forward to your verdict.

Nice job and write up Dammit

Just one thing I'm not sure about after reading this and the other speaker threads - can I use these in my car which has the full Bose factory kit?

I'm 99% I can but don't want to order them until I'm 100%. Wife wants to know what I want for a Christmas...

Thanks

Here's a very similar video walkthrough someone else has made to show how to up cycle an old set of 986/996 speakers to make adaptors for a replacement set

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W0LPyCoq5k8

I had watched that one, I thought it made sense, just wanted it to be a little neater and with greater retention of the speaker - that chap uses glue, whereas if you cut out bits of the retaining ring for the ears on the speaker it holds it firmly in place with no requirement for a bonding agent.

I believe that you can - hopefully someone else will weigh in, but my understanding is that the MOST fibre optic stuff is between the HU and the amp/s, with the speakers all fed via standard metal wire.

A quick test would be to unscrew one of your speakers and see what it is, of course.

Thanks. I'm PCM 1 so pre MOST I believe. Speakers ordered

I believe that the Bose speakers are a lower impedence than your normal 4 Ohm versions.

Think they are only 2 Ohm. They should be marked when you take them out.

Get a Torx driver and pull one put, it's marked quite clearly on the base of the magnet.

If it's indeed the case that Bose/MOST systems are 2 ohms for all the speakers then I'll happily buy a pair of 100.3's off you, and I imagine someone else will take the others - then you can buy a set that will work (if they are available).
